STO Errors?

Post by Vulnair »

Hello all.

My external hard drive is throwing a fit so I cannot run STO off of it like I was earlier with a different toon. Now, I have downloaded Arc and I am attempting to run it off of that. However, I cannot access the game. Because of a HUGE patch the game did, I didn't discover the issue until today. The launcher loads and logs me in fine but then it says "patching" in the little bar at the bottom then it doesn't do anything. The launcher didn't freeze because it still cycles through the ads for the different events and such but I can't get past this issue. The launcher has been sitting for about 10 minutes now with no change. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Does it ever tell you how large the patch file is? If this is a fresh install, there may be a LOT to patch. What launcher version does it say you have (lower left corner).

You can also click on Options in the top right corner of the launcher and try enabling/disabling the settings under Patching, especially Force Verify. If it is already checked, uncheck it, save, then go back in and recheck it and save again. When you try to log in again, the launcher will run a scan and verify that all of your game files are OK. This might take 10-15 minutes.

If the verification passes, you might try setting a proxy for the patch in the Options.

If that doesn't work, put all of the options back to the way they were and scroll down to the bottom where there is a box called Command Line. In there, put

-enabledebugconsole -console

-console opens a real time reporting window that tells you things like network performance, etc. I am not sure how useful it will be in your case, but it doesn't hurt to try it. -enabledebugconsole creates a debug.log file in the root of your game's install directory. You can view it using any text editor like notepad or wordpad. A lot of what gets logged in there will be nonsensical, but some of it may be helpful.

I had a problem with my game crashing upon login. I enabled the debug console and looked at the debug.log file that was created when the game crashed. In there was a bunch of entries that said:

[1123/202624:ERROR:backend_impl.cc(2083)] Corrupt Index file
[1123/202624:ERROR:cache_util_win.cc(43)] Unable to move the cache: 0
[1123/202624:ERROR:backend_impl.cc(134)] Unable to move cache folder F:\Star Trek Online_en\cef_cache to F:\Star Trek Online_en\old_cef_cache_000
[1123/202624:ERROR:backend_impl.cc(221)] Unable to create cache

So, I manually renamed the cef_cache folder to old_cef_cache_000 like the client was trying to do and started the client again. It created a new cef_cache folder with fresh content in it and that seems to have solved the problem. See if your debug.log file tells you anything useful like that.

One other thing to try is running the game without using the launcher. Go into your game install directory > Star Trek Online > Live (your directory path may be different) and launch the game using GameClient.exe instead of the default Star Trek Online.exe that your shortcuts use.

There is also the option of trying to start the game in Safe Mode (a setting in Options again). Be warned that doing so will probably reset all of your graphics settings to the absolute minimum. You will have to go into your in game options and reset everything to higher settings when you are finally able to log in.

If worse comes to worst, you may have to start deleting files, most likely some of the other cache files or some patch files. I don't remember the specifics on what to delete, but a good Google search can probably give you some suggestions.

Don't forget to go back into options and delete the contents of the Command Line box when you are done.

I have the following:

Version ST.46.20141123a.16

This is what I am seeing before and after attempting the force verify:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)Image
It was not checked so I checked it, saved it, and then exited the launcher. I logged in again and it did not do anything. I went back in and it was checked. Maybe I did something wrong? :censored: :brickwall: :brickwall:

Thanks for taking the time to help me.

HEADS UP:

I turned off on-demand patching and it seems to have worked. The launcher is patching.

Imagine that...

Thanks for the help, KickKat. Now I can hopefully work on a promotion or two.
