They are able to. They said in one of the ask cryptic things that you can determine what skills your character learns so you can actually mix and match engineering/science skills you want. Thus you can learn the cruisers skill.

Q: If a player creates a character during headstart, then enters his retail key at launch (which opens up the exclusives), do pre-existing characters receive the exclusive items and costumes?
A: Yes, except for the Joined Trill.

Q: How do I get the exclusive costume pieces and the Joined Trill?
A: Once you’ve added your retail key to your account, the costume pieces and Trill are unlocked for you during character creation.

So, during the head start I have to play an "In between" class/character until the game goes officially live. Kind of lame but whatever

Guess I can try the Escort ships and make a Voth or something, then when the game is officially out in February ill be able to make my joined trill and see these...costume pieces.

It sounds like a great pre-order bonus. You can't customize her apparel though(No uniforms...so no TOS Borg, no DS9 Uniformed-Borg etc)

I decided to go for the "Joined" Trill bonus. It was the race/class I wanted to play at the start anyways (Go Spots!)

I figure it's my "Main" character. Sure having a powerful exclusive bridge officer is nice...

I like to have a powerful exclusive class. It'll either be extremely far down the road in some expansion quest line to become a "Joined" trill for those who didn't pre-order this version or not at all.

I also pre-ordered through Gamestop. But now I am thinking of asking for a refund and either going through Amazon for the Borg B/O or Atari for the Trill and Defensive Battery... stupid non-uniform non-standardized bonus content! You curse me! CURSE ME!
