When did Starfleet first come in contact with the Cardies???
I ask this because I am watching ST 2009 (I know, its research, honest) and Uhura orders 2 Cardassian sunrisers (what I heard) when she's at the bar at the start of the movie.
I thought they came in contact a lot later.

Re: Cardassians
The Cardassian poet Iloja of Prim was in exile on Vulcan at some point in the 23rd Century. Curzon was alive, so it was later than that scene, but there was enough relations between the Cardassians and Federation for there to be political asylum rules in place.
The Cardassian Union was founded around in the 19th Century, 300 years before the Federation. In a deleted scene in Tears of the Prophets, Garak says one of the founders of the Union was born in the Ventani system, suggesting they were already warp capable and colonizing new systems before that.
So they've been around a long time, and aren't that far removed from several core worlds of the Federation.

Re: Cardassians
Well if you want to be technical and you believe Enterprise as canon, There was one episode where they encountered a Cardassian (though unconscious or dead in that station that repaired their ship) and in another episode there was mention of that Organian pair visiting a Cardassian ship...so like I said if you take Enterprise as canon personally...they were out and about and possibly near by even back in the 22nd century.
Besides you're talking about JJ Trek, with Transwarp Transporters and personal communicators that can reach the other side of the Quadrant
I think a Cardassian drink is low on the goof list
