Would the films have gotten a good reception in theaters without all of the explosions and action? Maybe. But they were just as likely to flop as well. There has been numerous films that were supposed to be huge box office movies that I went to see on the first weekend and it was dead.

At the end of the day. JJ did what he thought he had to do to put Star Trek into theaters, do a decent homage to the original show and films and sell seats. We can harp on him about his lack of knowledge all we want but there are plenty of examples through out the shows and films where things were just off the wall and completely contradicted something previously stated. Especially in TOS where they called Warp things like Time Warp.
Sorry, I don't buy the 'put Star Trek in theaters at any cost' argument. I call it as I see it: a bad movie's a bad movie, and a bad ST movie is even worse because it hurts a franchise I like.

I agree Sysil. I think parts of ST lore are compelling enough to build an awesome movie out of. That said, the last 2 movies by JJ did garner huge amounts of profits (even the one I dislike: Into the Darkness is highest grossing ST movie of all time, inflation accounted for!), so as far as producers are concerned JJ's awesome! I don't think it's all JJ's fault either, his script writer especially Lindelof thought he's writing the the sequel sorts of "Dark Knight" of "Star Trek: Reboot", and that's what he came up with...
