International Flag Of Earth

Planet Earth Could Get its Own Flag.

A design project, in partnership with NASA, may have birthed a new flag to represent the planet Earth, one that pioneers may plant into the surface of Mars on a planned mission for mid-2030. The Earth flag was conceived by graphic designer Oskar Pernefeldt from Beckmans College of Design in Sweden, as part of his graduation project, called ‘The International Flag of Earth’. But this isn’t just any graduation project, as Pernefeldt had help from major companies such as LG and BSmart, while NASA were also involved.
I'd rather a little more thought go in to it than this. Also when i first saw it i immediately thought "Olympics".

Hmm, yes. Somewhat underwhelming isn't it? And there have been so many good designs made for tv. On the other hand, it could have been much worse.

Lol, might have been nice to have earth in it somewhere, or at least colors representative of it. But ya Olympics resounds in it well.

I imagine the Olympics connection is probably not coincidence. Just guessing there, but the olympics in one of the few truly international businesses. In this context I mean multiple international business interests as opposed to businesses that do business internationally.

Anyway, I would not envy the person trying to come up with a design that was meant to represent non-dictatorial unity.

And of course a UFP-like Flag (Including the UE Flag from Ent), would be awesome, but the united nations flag is nearly identical in theme and concept, so that introduces politics on a direct level (So does business in my opinion)...

So you see designing something that was not tied to the politics of a particular state or country, business interests, or perceived political agenda would be tricky as hell.

Personally, I would have much rather seen a global contest that had nothing to do with corporate sponsorship or any particular country's governmental agency involvement. Just to see what people could come up with. However, the artists mentions having guidance from sources academic as well as corporate, and he claims to adhere to traditional "Rules" of heraldry, which is interesting.

As someone mentioned already, it could be a lot worse. Though appreciation would probably have to come after a bit of reflection on the challenges inherent to such a project. Which is only a proposal at this point as I understand it.

Excellent topic Husker!

maj!

It's not really something I can see them waving in triumph as they beat back the alien hordes.

Mm.. I can see the mathematical implications of pi, but that's about all the universally human I see in it. A bit too one-sided japanese for my taste.

I'd have preferred the DaVinci drawing, or the one we sent in V'ger.. I mean, Voyager VI.

It looks like something that was put together at the last second, like the guy agree to do it and then forgot untill someone dropped by his office 30 minutes before closing and was like, "Hey Bill, you got that Earth flag design? I'm gonna propose it tomorrow morning"

"Uh...YA! just putting a few finishing touches on it now. (Gary walks away) SHIT! SHIT! SHITSHITSHITSHITSHIT!!!!"

Gary spends 20 minutes on Microsoft paint, puts together some random crap, and then goes home to swill a few shots of rye after being unusually distant with his wife Karen and shouting at his kids to go to damn bed before hastily scribbling some BS about the symbology of the flag on spongebob napkin left over from his middle childs recent birthday party.

Goes in the next morning, still slightly hung over and presents his crap to Gary before his meeting. Gary obviously is displeased but in a tight situation, knowing he has no choice but to present this lame excuse to the world. Thanks a lot Bill, you freaken slacker.
