Oh ...
I am not sure what I did to upset them, but that Recluse and his three buddies he recruited along the way followed me all over the map. It didn't matter what I did, they just kept coming. I tried engaging the ringleader, but you will notice that when I did, his resistance spiked to 91 on his hull and stayed that way for about 2 minutes! Because of that resistance, he was actually out DPSing me in terms of real damage, so I couldn't even take him one on one, let alone along with his 3 sidekicks. That second resistance spike is where I got annoyed and made a second direct attack run on him.

During that encounter, I did 5.77 million damage at a rate of 8.8k DPS, including the times I had to completely run away to heal. Out of that I did ~500k raw damage to the Tholian. That translated to ... 78k real damage to his hull.

As far as how relentless he was, this graph kind of says it all.

Ratio of attacks per target (Remember, the Typhoon is my pet):

Oh. P.S. After all of that, they never got me. That one death is when the CE scored a 50k crit on my aft when my hull was already partially down. That Guardian is a tough ship.

So what was his power level spike to 91 for 2 min, what does that?

I am not sure, but if I had noticed that science vessel in the group, I would have asked for a subnuke to see if it made a difference. If it happens again, hopefully I will be in an intel ship so I can try out both the mini science and engineering subnukes they come with.

Whatever was going on, Cryptic needs to pull that data and learn from it. I was swearing the entire time, but truth is, I had more fun fighting off that one ship than anything else I have done in the game in a long time. There was no cheap one-shot BS and no boring I-am-guaranteed-victory-if-I-mindlessly-push-my-fire-button-enough-times. That ship was determined to wear me down with normal weapons and kill me the old fashioned way, and would have done so if I had made a big enough mistake. Sure I could have just respawned and kept on, but the way it played out, there was a real sense of urgency about staying alive while I frantically used every means at my disposal to do so. I even started trying to use different tactics to kill him, including luring him in close to the CE so he would be hit by that AOE blast. It worked and he took 82k damage, but I screwed up and got hit myself, so couldn't press the only advantage I ever had over him. There was also a sense of accomplishment when the CE blew up and I was able to warp away without Tholian von Richthofen ever killing me, even though I never killed him either and we were still shooting each other as I left.

On last thing of interest. I took 1.6 million in damage, but only managed ~700k in healing. Some of the difference was normal regeneration but a lot of it came from player Miku who took on the role of dedicated healer. I am positive that there were at least three instances where, were it not for Miku's help, I would have been space dust.

So, through what was most likely a bug, Cryptic managed to make something more balanced and fun, and make a dedicated healing boat useful, if not required ... something they can't seem to do on purpose. =-p

I like the fact that it chased you across the map. It's AI like that we need in the game. Instead of throwing a fleet of ships at us, make it one or two of these and it'll be a lot more fun.

The Bulwark from the Delta episode was like this too. I had to attack, pull back and wait for cd's then attack again all while avoiding his weapons range. It required proper skill which is what's missing in this game. It really is biggest gun wins.
