Now to really get the discussion going by switching sides for a second. I can see a lot of the points everyone's making but for me the only truly evil thing I've heard from all Rivera is in reference to new Klingon only missions and episodes. His answer and I quote "that's why we ended the war so we wouldn't have to deal with that anymore."...

Now the changes...I can understand but according to cbs, sto is canon.. So here we have story being ruined because either a. We don't make enough to expand this, or we are too lazy so war over everyone is happy yaay.

(Had to throw that in too many thought I was pro pwe/cryptic lol)...
Oh and when our glorious leader the geko gets destroyed on a trivia game about star trek lore...(by yours truly among others) there is a problem letting him make story decisions.

RE: Ending the War.

A lot of people wanted the war to end, myself amongst them. For exactly the reasons cited... If Cryptic cannot afford to spend the resources supporting entirely separate factions, than I would MUCH rather we at least have access to all of the new content as it comes out. This comes from years of doggedly continuing to play KDF before they opened up all of the end game.

Only thing missing there is; now that we are "Friends" we should be able to team for all non faction-specific content. As opposed to just being able to set up private rooms and team that way. But I imagine that ties into the faction-specific content so yeah. At least we got a full leveling experience before they totally abandoned the KDF.

That said, it's not like they are making new Fed only missions either, so there is that. In fact, he should have lead with that in the interview.

As to the story, I love that the most recent set of new PvE queues include Klingon-centric stories, that the propaganda is all faction-centric, and that there are now devblogs coming out here and there with part of the story being told from a KDF perspective.

So, big picture-wise, I don't feel like the KDF is getting snubbed... Except that we did not get BoPs for Pilot ships, but that's another topic.

If they started making events, new FEs, and PvE queue content only accessible to the Feddies, then I'd start yelling. But again, Feds are not getting special treatment at the moment, not beyond larger ship selection anyway. But even with that, there are only so many ships I can fly at once anyways.

maj!
So much for Photo Bucket.

I wouldn't worry about STO being canon. Look at the other big sf franchise, hundreds of books written in the expanded universe all considered canon until the new parent company decided they weren't because "JJ wants to write something different". Look how that worked out for Trek, it divided the fan base.

CBS could very well do this if they ever get round to producing another series in which case STO will never have existed.

I agree with that. The KDF needed content and the quickest way to do it was to end the war and give them access to the same content as Feds. I just wish they had handled it better than that scene in the Great Hall with the Iconian, maybe a big Fed/Klink/Alpha Quadrant Species battle with the Iconians showing up and the realization that no one species can do it alone. A simple handshake doesn't do it for me. Also i'd imagine the Klinks asking for outside help in battle would brand them all as cowards among their own people.

Except once upon a time, Mass Effect taught us something valuable about forging alliances: "It's never that easy, even when the galaxy is at stake."

No offense, but I feel like the fan base divided itself.

You're correct. Poor choice of words on my behalf.

It's no biggie. It just seems like I see a lot of critics judge things these days without actually turning the first page. People's silly reactions to new expressions of art, design, filmmaking, or even speculation of things to come is why YouTube groups like "TheKnow" have to exist to calm everybody down. :P

I mean, on the topic of this thread, it's not smart to serve an item consumed by a metric of the community for two years strong (and I don't buy that BS that the metrics told them otherwise; I see too many summer outfits and Risian ships to support that theory), and then eliminate it to serve them something they didn't ask for, especially when they're paying customers.

Then there's where this thread went: CBS's definition of canon. That's up to them, not us. If they choose to allow another director's aesthetic on a film (and give them their blessing) while adding yet another—amidst many—alternate universe, then so be it. We still have our old Trek, and at least we know in advance that we're getting a newer, shiner, flashier dose of our sci-fi digest instead of them suddenly dropping it in our laps and denying the rest of trek ever existed. Some act like that's what happened, and that's not at all factual. If we decide to be butthurt about it and attack those that like the JJ Abrams interpretation over the classic (or vice versa), then we're no better than infantile rivals slinging wet sand in each other's faces.

I'm proud to have liked everything from the classic TV series to JJ Abrams fresh interpretation; I will, however, always prefer The Next Generation over all of the above. Still, in the end, I'm a MOVIE fan, and those stars don't revolve around Star Trek, or any interpretation of it. Unlike a lot of the fans I've dealt with on various message boards, I grew up, and now I'm the one building those sandboxes. I'd like it if the kids inside could play nice.

Its funny that Cryptic are worried about their metrics for the summer event when there are other things that are dire need to attention...

Note the number of players...
