Probably right there, if only because less sectors means less chances of getting the missions you want, in the quantity you want from traveling sector to sector...
Of course I put my pie in the sky hat and wish that combining these would make integrating the DOFF system into the Gateway easier... but no... pie in the sky...
Doff solution should be a longer list with a kind of rolling reset - keep or increase the frequency of hard resets but have more frequent refills of the list to replace missions you've taken, with the same system on department heads and shipboard assignments.
This could reduce the usefulness of call out channels if people don't draw from the same refill pool, but the reduced number of sectors would do a lot of that anyway.
+1, i see engage enemy pop up all the time while traveling. It would be cool if they engaged us automatically, scaling by level etc.
They used to didn't they, may be it's my mind playing tricks on me, but I swear at the beginning they would auto engage if they ran into you. (this may well have been over 4 years ago).
They did, the "Enemy Signal Contacts" that are now in sector space as tumors used to be spaceships flying around (e.x. Klingon, Romulan) that would follow you and once they "caught" you they would turn into the tumor and you would go inside the instance. But alas Cryptic removed that "feature" because people complained. I didn't mind it honestly, it made sector space a bit more interesting having an enemy spaceship coming at you.

The "tumor" is what they turned into when players were engaged with them. Stopped them from pursuing or engaging players in sector space. If everybody left their mission map, they'd return to normal and start chasing people again.
When Cryptic stopped them from engaging, they did it the cheap way by just making them never leave their engaged state.
Here is the Dev Blog. Very in depth and full of details about what they did and why they did it. I dont think Ive been as excited about anything related to this game since I heard about them adding the Gorn Planet back in the summer before the game went F2P.
Theyve finally added a lot of canon systems and planets. Most will be simply objects in space in the begining which is to be expected. But planets will be locked into position rather then spinning around the star. Giving players a much more immersive interaction with the systems as in reality as you approached a system you wouldnt see the planets spinning around the sun ten times in one minute. These objects will also allow players the chance to create Foundry missions for specific planets rather then the system. Alot of systems and locations have been moved to better fit into the new Sector Space. Either for gameplay flow reasons, an attempt to better place them within their canon location or because they needed to fill out the new sectors. Theyve also added a score of planets previously left out of the game like Betazed, Breen, Frenginar, Trill and Tellar. Space has been given the illusion of being vast and open while objects like the blue raceway in the astrometrics mode has been completely taken away. Sector Grids now indicate distance from light year, month, week and days. The Delta Quadrant Sectors have now been turned into one map and Gamma Orionis is now to the north east of Sol besides the RSE and above the RR Sectors. The Gateway to the Solanae and Jenolan Spheres is now deeper into RR held space better representing the RRs Command of them.
Yeah going to be really cool to see what they do. Have not been this excited over changes with sector space since they added the ability to turn off the astrometrics mode.
May make having more points in warp coils more useful along with using slipstream in ships such as the vesta. When cruising around at about transwarp 25, the map seems so small; hopefully will make it seem more worth the effort of going that fast.
