I'd suggest looking into newer ones before you do anything else. You can get some amazing cards right now for very cheap, especially if you lean towards the ATI side of the world. What operating system are you on? 4 gigs of ram should be fine for any, but with vista/7 if you're running background processes it tends to slow down... especially on 7. Windows 7 has a tendency to put everything into RAM so it will load faster, problem is that it hurts you if you are running a lot of processes without huge numbers backing it up. This is especially true when running newer games.
Are you serious? I'm running XP and I really don't have much trouble. My Champions example was on low settings. Turning up settings on most newer graphical heavy games is trouble for me. I was feeling that CPU and card need upgraded.

I also was under the impression my CPU does not meet the minimum standard for STO. Is this not true? I thought the minimum spec was an AMD Athlon X2 3800+, which I thought was a dual core. Mine isn't a dual core, is it?
Definitely, when it comes to gaming, your lag comes from this (hardware wise) in this order: Video card, RAM, CPU, etc...

The 3800+ is a 2 gig card, dual core. You have a 3 something gig single core. Your card may be under spec, but it shouldn't have any trouble. And like I said, the game probably won't even use two cores. I will say though that I'm not 100% sure on that, but that's besides the fact.

The best course of action, in my humble opinion, would to be upgrade the video card and see if that will do it. I'm almost positive that with a good video card, your system will handle not only this game, but a lot of the newer games... Keep in mind you won't be able to get any game off the shelf and crank the graphics to max, but you won't have any problem running it smoothly at a good setting.

If anything waiting to buy the CPU/mobo will potentially save you some money down the road

Nope, but IM happy as long as it just works. lol Im not as big into gaming as I once was. But Star Trek will always have that certain pull on me.

I dont plan on spending anymore money then I need to on the comp cuz I will be only getting it for STO.

No other reasons for getting a more advanced comp than my current laptop.

Not many games out will run over multiple cores so as long as you're not running a lot of background processes you won't notice any lag from the CPU. However, your video card does need replacing. Depending on where your budget is will dictate that. As long as your budget is over at least $100 you won't have any problem running this game. Also, what operating system are you on and how much ram do you have?
Thats a relief...

The video card shouldn't be a problem...any recommendations? (I live in the UK btw)

As for the ram, I have 1023.3 MB.

Operating system? Idk.

That would all really depend on your budget. I'd also recommend a little bit more ram. I'm assuming you're on a Windows computer, so on the bottom left of your screen there's the start button. Is that a circle or is that more rectangular?

If it's rectangular you're probably running windows XP. If that's the case, 1 gig of ram should be alright (though you would obviously benefit for more) If it's a circle, I would highly recommend more ram.

http://www.crucial.com/uk/ They will sell ram, but they also run a scan tool that will tell you exactly the specs of RAM you need and how many slots you have free. I wouldn't go jumping into buying right now, but knowing is half the battle! (GI Joe!!!)

You said that about $100 would get me a good one. In the UK, the currency is £. So a good one would cost me about £50...no problem.

My "start" button is rectangular.

Cool then, you'll be fine with your RAM, but as I said, more could never hurt.

Here's some pages of good cards in the $100 (£50) range:

PCI Slot:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143189 GeForce GTX 260 (£112.53)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150351 ATI Radeon HD 4850 (£78.14)

AGP Slot:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814131329 ATI 4670 (£68.76)

Obviously the chip you want will depend on what slots you have available and how much room you have. Then I would research a little bit for benchmarks for some of the above examples and some of the others in the same category (they will be pitted against the card in online reviews) Try http://www.tomshardware.com or http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ for some in depth reviews.

I gave both PCI and AGP examples since I'm not sure what you have... If you know, that saves us a step. If not, if you could find a model number on your motherboard or if anything download CPUz at http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php then click the "Mainboard" tab when it's running and read off the manufacturer and model and I'll look it up for you and tell you what you can run.

--Edit--

Btw, Nvidia cards tend to be more expensive. They're good cards but to get around the same power as the ATI cards you'll have to pay a bit more :(

Graphics Card is...in the mail... i forget what i ordered now :D
4gb ram (The MOBO can support 16gb but i dont have a 64bit OS yet :()
processor is a 1.8ghz dual core, but I have a 2.2ghz dual core in the mail too

thats a little over the reccomended specs - the only thing that should bottleneck my playing speed now is teh interwebz. damn you BT!!!!

Time for some new interwebnets!

I lucked out on service providers where I'm at... Their interwebs are amazing... but their tv service sucks :( Eh, still happy to have all the nets!
