Yes, there has been talk among the fans that CBS/Paramount stole the idea from Alec Peters, because he had discussed the all of his ideas with CBS/Paramount before making Prelude to Axanar, and one of the reasons of the lawsuit was to discredit him before ST:D came out. This is all mostly conjecture though.

I'd love to see what they can do with star trek.

Sure, they'd borrow heavily all the best bits of the good trek episodes and brand it "Star Trek: The federation awakens" and throw in cameos from previous cast members.
