It's just a shame that the desperate situation that's prompted this couldn't be replicated in the game outside of the FE's. There's no evidence of these worlds falling and millions dying.

It would have been nice to see worlds on fire and encountering distress calls all over the galaxy. That way they could have hit the reset button when the Krenim weapon was fired and put back all the shiny happy planets.

Guess the creaky game engine and budget wouldn't allow for that.

The game engine would allow it just fine. They did a fine enough job with the Borg invasion, and the sector space revamp does a fine job of showing ongoing conflict over wide areas, but not one of the alerts that pop up involve the Heralds.

Showing the destruction would just be a matter of applying the better map techniques we've seen - larger planets laid into the skybox instead of spheres in the map allowing greater detail, atmospheric maps showing actual ground level destruction like the Undine battle zone, and so forth.

They don't necessarily need to show it in a persistent form because of STO's hazy comic book style concept of time progression. There's a certain storytelling power that could be instilled simply by having us arrive at some planet - it hardly matters where - only to find it already in flames, with nothing for us to do but inflict some petty revenge on what few attackers haven't already left.

Iconian red alerts would be a good start, maybe even while doing patrols a few Heralds would show up much like how they had the Enterprise show up to help in the Romulan patrols; but instead of helping they be attacking.

The Heralds really need to be everywhere, breathing down on the players if we are doing so bad against them.

problem is this doesnt work. for the iconians to be winning you'd have to be losing and that turns people off.
