A fitting obit from the NYT.
Learned something I didn't know about Mr. Nimoy - they say behind every great man is a woman; it was his long-time wife, Susan, who encouraged him to keep acting at a point in his career when all he could get was small bit parts. He was seriously considering dropping acting and finding more stable employment, but, fortunately for all of us, he persevered and soon landed the role of Spock.
One might say, well, in some alternate universe Mr. Nimoy did quit acting, and some other actor took over the role of Spock. But it wouldn't have been the same. As the NYT article notes, he came from an Orthodox Jewish familiy living in (Catholic) Boston, and so he knew what it was like to be an outsider, which obviously informed his role as the only Vulcan on a crew of emotional humans.
R.I.P. And thank you for entertaining and enlightening us for all these years.

A sad day
Star Trek means a lot (to me) and I think Nimoy was at the center of that importance.
This is a huge loss.

Whenever somebody who lived a long and full life passes, I try to celebrate his or her life rather than mourn their passing. It is not always easy, but in my view it is more logical.
So while it is a sad day, let us take solace in the fact that he, in fact, DID live long and prosper.
