All in all very impressed with the response from EA/Origin, No dramas, got it sorted for me with minimum fuss. Props to my bank also for being on the ball with the credit card anti-fraud protection.
Could've been much worse.
but wait.. theres more. you are now the proud owner of an 80ft bass boat, and your credit score takes a nosedive

Apparently I requested a new password for my STO account a few days ago.
Time to change the password on that and the e-mail....

The saga unfortunately does continue as my account has now been banned from all online play for "Violation of the Terms of Service" in FIFA 15, likely perpetrated by whoever decided to buy it on my account.
Deep joy, have contacted the accounts bods, lets hope for similarly speedy resolution, although i've heard it can take weeks to get a response out of this arm of the EA tentacled monster. I can still play single player for now which is ok.
EDIT: After having a look around online it appears that this type of fraud is a widespread problem, quite a few people have had similar experiences. The fraudulent activity seems to relate to the transfer market in FIFA 15. EA have been dropping the ban hammer pretty hard and it appears that they go in heavy and it can be difficult to get the ban rescinded after, although it seems when fraudulent account activity is involved you're more likely to get the ban removed.
My only other option if I can't get the ban removed is to create a new account and request Advisor help to move all my games over to the new account.

C'est la vie atm. I can still play DA: Inquisition, at least the single player which is all I'm into. I've appealed the ban but expect it to be a while before I hear. If it is a major deal there's still things I can do.

As an addendum to all this. The problem has now garnered a little media attention. Still waiting to hear about having my account un-banned but not surprising given holidays and what is starting to look like a pretty major security derp.

hacking capabilities have increased exponentially in the last 5 years, yet account security uses an archaic username/password combo and then your forced to use the same login information across all their games/forums
when is security gonna come out of the stoneage. this is arms race 101 stuff. someone makes a better sword you make a better shield.

THREAD RESURRECTION!
To finally complete the saga... After a final nag a couple of weeks ago (didn't get a response when I appealed in December) EA responded that my account would be restored after I did a verification with Adviser Support. Got that sorted this afternoon - had a quick chat and answered my security questions. All is sorted and my Origin is back, had a little log into BF4 and it worketh!
As compensation for the issue and a thanks for reporting it I have got a 15% discount off my next purchase which is better than being punched in the face.
