PC Upgrade

Post by Torp »

With Star Trek in the horizon and seeing as my computer does not meet the recommended requirements (and I love nice graphics) It's time for some new PC hardware.
Unfortunately I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to good value-for-money hardware. Maybe someone can give me tips about what I should or should not do!

I'm currently in need for the following hardware:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
CPU cooler: Scythe Mugen 2
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
RAM: GeIL GV34GB1333C7DC (2x 2gb DDR3 CAS 7)
GFX card: Club3D HD 5850 1GB (CGAX-58524IDP)
Harddisk: Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ, 1TB

The rest of the hardware will be used from my old pc (power 600W, dvd-burner etc.)
Does anyone have any comments on this setup? Also keep in mind I'm a pretty poor student so I can't afford 2 gfx cards etc.

Any help in this matter is really appreciated.

Also, If anyone else needs some help with upgrades of their pc/laptops please feel free to add your request in this topic.

How much is that graph card?

I use a Nvidia 8600gt with 1g onbord ram and I run the graphics nicely. :) Those cards are very reasonable as far as I know.. :D

It's around 200-220 euro's here. My current graphics card (8800GT) would suffice for the job but I already have someone who wants to buy it so I'll take my chances and get a new one. :)

Thank you Torp! This is exactly what I needed! :D

Well, I checked...everything is fine apart from my CPU (Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz) and Video Card (GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) ). Any suggestions on what to replace them with?

Problem with replacing the CPU is often you'll need a new motherboard for the new socket and in that case you might as well buy new/faster RAM as it's not that expensive and helps the cpu (not sure about this one.. again i'm a noob) For suggestions check my first post. might help a bit. Or like me wait for experts to check this topic ;)

I purchased my computer from CyberpowerPC. I would recommend them to anyone.

of course newegg is a good source as well but you do need to know a little bit more about what you want.

For me, the first question to ask is what cpu do you want. After that, the motherboard and video cards will fallin to place.

I have a EVGA 680i motherboard. It is older but supports dual core (might even do quad core) intel chips.

This is likely a good time to buy because chip makers are hurting so good prices can be found. And memory is DIRT cheap right now as well.

True prices are pretty low. I'm choosing an AMD chip because it's cheaper and in gaming it's almost as good as the i7 processors from Intel. Sure they might be better for multitasking and using video editing programs etc but I barely use the. rather save 70-100 euros.

I won't buy a new pc because I will also be paying for the case, the power supply, dvd burner and often stuff like extra software, mouse, keyboard or monitor. I already have those things :)
