From what i've learnt so far about STO, you can use a Cruiser, Escort or Science Ship in the game. Yet these depend on what skills you choose for your character e.g. if you choose your captain to be an Engineer, you can use a cruiser. (Please correct me if i'm wrong! )
As you can see, I chose to be a tactical officer. Yet i'm aiming to command a cruiser in the game itself. So do the divisions you choose in the fleet reflect on the role you play in STO?
Sorry if I havn't been clear enough, but I hope you get my meaning

There's only so much information revealed because it's in the Closed Beta stage.
Testers wouldn't want to give you any misinformation, however
I think you'll be fine
You could be a science officer piloting an escort or a tactical officer piloting a science vessel. Just depends how insane you are or what your angle is!

I assume the skys the limit though a science officer in a Escort ship seems a little crazy but crazy enough to work ? can always find out in the open beta
Im going to go Engineer in a cruiser the traditional way the game wants you to do it but some combinations might work well some might flop and crash and burn
Just thinking being a tactical officer in a cruiser might be interesting but im assuming the engineer has some skills " Boost energy output to phasers " ( pure speculation here ) so even an engineer im assuming will have some capabilities to make his weapons stronger

so all should be good, right?
It has been said you can major in two career paths and then eventually focus on one as time goes by.
I personally plan on focusing on Tactical and engineering. They will complement each other just the way I need for intel. I plan on using a cruiser ingame as much as possible due to it's larger energy supply for boosting warp and sheilds. Intel will need to boost engines alot I think. I can't wait!!

ah cool so they leave enough skill points around to have a main field and half a secondary field. I cant wait till open beta gonna have a ball just thinking and experimenting
ill probably focus on engineering and doing a little tactical , or science not sure if the science line will have some pretty cool skills
