I get lost in this thread very easily. There is a lot of great music in here. Someone mentioned Jack White and that made me think of The Dead Weather. I haven't listened to them in a while. Most everything they did resonates with me at some level, but I particularly like Cut Like A Buffalo
I've been writing a space opera (it didn't start out that way) set on Mars and one of my primary characters learned something while she was at a bar that was going to cause her a great deal of grief in the following months and years. I openly blame The Silversun Pickups for this because of the song Panic Switch. When I write, the mood of the music directly affects the content. Sometimes the mix is a disaster, but other times it places me in the right place to fully explore every aspect of the moment. That's what this song did for this piece of writing.
Perhaps one of the most difficult things about writing science fiction is the music. What will the taste in music be like in 400 years on Earth? What about somewhere else?
The only thing I can do is impose music I like on an unknown future and hope it fits.
