R.R.W. Chir'Daki

Among the ships of the growing Romulan Republic naval forces, one can find a number oddities and foreign designs. With shipyards overburdened to provide both local system security and address needs in the Delta Quadrant, command officers have taken advantage of any resources they can bring forward. Some are recovered derelicts, others are retiring classes of other species secured through lawful trade. One unique hull among them is Chir'Daki, a Dominion War era Jem'Hadar Battleship.

Dominion forces had discovered evidence of a Romulan research facility in the Haakona System, known as "The Vault." Suspecting the facility was lightly guarded, a Jem'Hadar Escort Carrier with several Attack Ships warped to Haakona while a Battleship stationed in the area for force projection or as a trump card. The vessel remained on alert as it intercepted, but did not interpret, the heavily encrypted distress calls from the system. What they did not realize was the scale of the facility nor the urgency and enormity of response that would occur when attacked.

Immediately upon entering the system, the strike force's communications were jammed. While the Jem'Hadar fought with their usual notable fervor, they were slowly isolated and eliminated with ruthless Tal'Shiar efficiency. Upon missing their first scheduled check-in, the Battleship scanned the system, but was blinded to any activity by the sophisticated countermeasure systems. The vessel warped into an ambush and was crippled so quickly, the crew was unable to even sacrifice themselves by destroying the ship.

The Tal'Shiar found the capture of the Dominion's newest and most powerful class right at the doorstep of their pinnacle black-ops research facility most fortuitous. While the war was not to last much longer, the ship was gutted and studied for years after its conclusion. Numerous conversions and experiments were attempted over the years, but there were too few experts in matter/anti-matter warp core systems and unique Dominion technology on staff. Most results were only acceptable as research platforms, such as methods of integrating polaron and plasma-based systems, with varying degrees of success.

Following the Hobus Supernova, day-to-day operations of the facility continued, but research projects began to be halted. With so much of the government in disarray, focus on humanitarian relief, and the fleet distracted with Klingon raiding, funding and direction beyond merely continuing to exist were in limbo. Most of the senior personnel at the facility were transferred to various other posts and few remained by the time the fracturing of the RSE had begun in earnest. An assorted band of those who had spent the most project time on the vessel plotted to commandeer her as the security had grown lax.

The ship was made ready for a skeleton crew and prepared for best speed. She made her way to the Reman enclave of Crateris managing to evade all contact other than a brief exchange with a pursuing T'varo. After a short stay to visit several settlements, the ship left orbit with many more crew aboard than when arriving. They continued their cautious escape from Romulan space into the Borderlands. Prior to the actual hijacking of the vessel, the conspirators had slowly accumulated the fruits of many valuable Vault projects. They engaged in barters with various Orion Syndicate groups to secure access to unregistered shipyards and other influence. Once the group had a chance to catch their breath and give the ship a proper overhaul (though foundational integration issues remained), they turned to considering what opportunities lay before them.

Between the common anti-imperial sentiment of the original deserters and general lawlessness of crew that had accumulated during their Borderlands hiatus, their initial forays were somewhat indiscriminate piracy. The most powerful faction over time turned to imposing pro-Reman policies both in the ship's command structure and privileges. A Tal'Shiar agent among the original core group was able to use this agitation to stage a successful, though short-lived mutiny. A counter-mutiny arose when an influential Reman, Yaan'su, convinced most of the crew that it should be obvious that everyone aboard would soon be Tal'Shiar captives with one of their operatives at the helm. She was backed by an Orion who held the loyalty of much of the crew accumulated in lawless space -and thus had no racial bias-, and emerged from the power struggle as the crew's senior-most officer.

She offered a more moderate tone on the racial issue than the previous commanders, bringing most of the Romulan contingent who were not formerly military back into the fold and continued to recruit them as readily as any other species at future opportunities. The core mutineers however, were abandoned on Nimbus III without exception. With a chance to start anew, the crew this time chose an outlook towards stabilizing the region. They recognized the growing plight of the outer colonies, pressed between an abusive government and an entirely unchained array of Klingon and Syndicate marauders. They found support and gratitude from local settlements for both the security presence (however ad hoc) and supplies liberated from raiders, often exchanged once again for access to maintenance facilities and what luxury entertainments could be made available to the crew to enjoy on their brief leaves. The ship was dubbed Chir'Daki by some, a reference to a plant who's spores releasing were remarked as similar to the ship's fighter launches when preparing to attack.

As the Elachi attacks on the settlements began, the crew were devastated at the loss of many they had come to know in the region. Once the rumors became prevalent of Tal'Shiar involvement, there was a unanimous consensus to act. Romulan, Reman, or otherwise, all had witnessed the depravity that had made no distinction between species. With Klingon and Syndicate raider frequency waning, the crew turned their full attention to the abusive and corrupt snake strangling the people of the Tau Dewa region. Their righteous fervor served them well in the form of military assets and hardware also being quite popular with their black market contacts. Striking at the lightly-guarded convoys attempting to seem innocuous and cat-and-mouse games with pursuing forces became the life of the crew.

With the establishment of the Romulan Republic and official naval forces able to take up some security, the crew once again turned to a well-earned rest period. While able to coordinate with the forces of the new government for a time, the sordid histories of much of the crew and the implications of such cooperation for a government seeking legitimacy and diplomatic relations became a source of friction. Many of the more lawless crew members drifted off naturally over time as order and legality began to take shape, as well. Seeing the practicality of the day, Yaan'su finally relieved what crew had remained with Chir'Daki to pursue their lives.

They had accumulated a modest level of wealth as well as notoriety for being a constant splinter in the paw of the Tal'Shiar. Many of the senior crew and original Vault personnel were able to pursue political influence or positions at various new scientific and design institutions. Yaan'su had been a systems engineer during her tenure at the Vault facility. Combined with her experience in keeping a ship in servicable condition with infrequent access to proper maintenance facilities gave her unique insights into optimizing ships for long-term deployments. Yaan'su became a citizen of the Romulan Republic and eventually muscled her way into a place at Mol'Rihan Shipyard to help establish the foundational design elements of the new Romulan Republic Warbirds going forward.

After the discovery of the Iconian gate system and the Solanae Dyson Sphere, a surge of new technological and research discoveries became possible. Yaan'su volunteered for civilian posting to the Dyson Joint Command that was established between the major Alpha Quadrant powers. She was among many teams responsible for establishing the Solanae Supply Depot and its various support systems.

When the possibility of integrating protonic polaron technology into existing ship systems began to be considered, Yaan'su lept at the opportunity. She discussed using Chir'Daki as a ship uniquely suited for being a testbed for the new systems, as the vessel was polaron-based already and had served in the same research capacity earlier in its life. As the Solanae Project moved along, Yaan'su recruited many of her old Vault research associates to implement the design specifications into the ship, finally completing the integration and updating that had been ongoing since the Dominion War. Now fit for service, she prepares to participate in exploring the Delta Quadrant with a professional crew and a clear mission.
