Brief Information
.....Suvok is a pure blood Vulcan from a family and clan with a long history of Vulcan traditionalist values. Due to a restless spirit and the influence of his uncle at an early age, he made the choice to leave Vulcan to pursue a career of exploration and scientific study. Isolated until then from races other than Vulcans, his introduction to other intelligent species came with its own troubles, which he has worked to overcome by the very values he rejected in his early years.

Personality
.....Suvok is, like most Vulcans, quintessentially Vulcan to outsiders and non-Vulcans. He appears cold, unfeeling, and approaches everything from a logical point of view, following the philosophy that all situations, problems, and issues can be broken down into mathematical equations with logical solutions and resolutions. His experiences with emotional species has made him aware that one must consider one's remarks and comments prior to speaking however, so he has affected a somewhat more observing stance of social interaction in recent years, if for no other reason to ensure the efficiency of the staff at their duties.
.....Despite his outwardly Vulcan-esque exterior however Suvok is a deeply philosophical and compassionate individual. Since childhood he has had a deep interest in the philosophical ideas of not only Vulcan culture, but other species as well. He has a general interest in the wellbeing of others, and will assist others as he can when the situation arises. He is a pacifist, and will refuse to harm anyone or anything unless there is no other alternative, and he follows the Vulcan tradition of veganism and will not partake of meat of any kind.

Family Information
.....Suvok has a small family who has deep ties to Vulcan. His parents descend from a clan that has long held isolationist ideals, feeling that outside influences on Vulcan society - particularly that of emotionally driven races - are a threat to the Vulcan way of life. The clan holds attaining the Kolinahr in high regard, with working toward it a family ideal. Suvok's association with his uncle V'rask caused him to question the clan's isolationist views, and awakened in young Suvok the desire to leave Vulcan to see other places, which caused friction between him and his parents. When he elected to pursue a Starfleet career after his advanced education, this friction intensified.

  • Father
    • Sabek - A prominent Vulcan archeologist and ardent supporter of Vulcan isolationist idealism.
      • Current Status: Living (continuing his archaeological work in the T'Karath Sanctuary)

  • Mother
    • T'Biril - A Vulcan historian and archaeologist. She supports her husband's isolationist ideals.
      • Current Status: Living (currently teaching Vulcan History at the Vulcan Science Academy)

  • Sister
    • T'Vanis - Suvok's younger sister who followed in her parent's desire that she receive her education on Vulcan.
      • Current Status: Living (studying Stellar Archaeology at the Vulcan Science Academy)

  • Uncle
    • V'rask - A career Starfleet Science Officer who chose Starfleet over a Vulcan Science Academy position. V'rask's career was the primary reason for Suvok's desire to pursue a career in Starfleet over his parent's wishes that he remain on Vulcan.
      • Current Status: Living (assigned to the U.S.S. William Bryant, NCC-240369)

Brief Biography

.....Childhood and Early Life (2368 - 2386)
.....Suvok was born on Stardate 45685.14 in the Vulcan city of Raal on the shores of the Voroth Sea to Sabek and T'Biril, two prominent Vulcan archaeological and history academics. He was introduced to Vulcan traditional values and practices throughout his young life by his parents who were ardent Vulcan isolationists and went to great lengths to limit themselves from exposure to other species outside their race. They also heavily impressed science and scientific inquiry upon him at the same time, instilling a desire and attachment to learning and study. He, along with his sister, went with their parents on their frequent expeditions to remote and ancient sites on Vulcan such as the T'Karath Sanctuary, ancient ruins within the Forge, and new found discoveries within the Osana Caverns. They spend the remainder of their time deep in study a the Vulcan Academy of Learning in Raal.

.....Stardate 62360.02 - Visit to Nisan (2386)
.....When Suvok was 18 years of age, he went on his first voyage into space when his parents were invited to participate in an archaeology dig on the planet of Nisan. The voyage had a profound effect on Suvok; his world had included only Vulcan before, but suddenly the entire universe seemed to open to him. He watched the passage of the suns and planets through the porthole en route to Nisan, and he began to consider other alternatives to a life only on his home planet. He knew that his parents would object, and he kept these early sentiments to himself.
.....The dig on Nisan lasted a short two months. During that time, Sabek and T'Biril did their best to keep their children isolated from the other species on the planet, but occasional exposure was difficult. The logical idealism that such exposure was dangerous to Vulcan traditions was impressed upon Suvok and his sister several times after such accidents, but privately Suvok began to disagree.
.....Suvok's parent's participation in the archeological study on Nisan came to an abrupt end on Stardate 62591.31, the day the Klingons attacked the Gorn at Gila IV. The resultant political upheaval that Sabek and T'Biril knew to be forthcoming they wished to avoid, and so they left Nisan and returned to Vulcan.

.....Return to Vulcan (2386 - 2398)
.....Suvok began his advanced education after returning with his family to Vulcan, where he began to study warp theory, stellar cartography, stellar archaeology, and physics. His decision to pursue cosmic education went against his father's insistence to pursue Vulcan historical sciences, and broke with his clan's traditions. Suvok knew he would find his place in the study of the Universe over a life in archaeological study of Vulcan, and attempted to convince his parents of this, but it was to no avail. In their isolationist ideals they were convinced he would somehow become "less Vulcan" because of the interaction that would be required with other species, and took offense to his rejection of Vulcan tradition that sons generally always follow in their father's footsteps.
.....Stardate 63527.16 was a date that changed things in the known galaxy forever, and even the isolationists on Vulcan would soon feel it's effects. Suvok was in study when he heard of the Hobus Supernova, and the destruction of Remus and Romulus. The impact of the explosion and events occurring immediately after it would be felt for decades, and Suvok knew that his own future might coincide with the events as they unfolded. As months pass with more and more news of the chaos the supernova caused, the revelation that the Vulcan Science Academy had allegedly refused to take action prior to the explosion sparks heated debate across Vulcan. Suvok's parents - for the first time in Suvok's life - became conflicted; the loss of life made it difficult to logically justify isolationist reasoning behind the refusal to assist Romulus.
.....Life at his family's home grew increasingly tense as he continued with his studies, and a year later grew even more so when Suvok's sister admitted to her parents that she was also planning on pursuing advanced education in stellar archaeology. The fact that she was hoping for an appointment to the Vulcan Science Academy did little to allay her parent's disappointment, and the logical assumption was that Suvok's own decisions had been influential in his sister's decision to forego tradition. His relationship with his parents grew more distant until there was hardly any interaction, and eventually Suvok left his family's home to live within the city of Raal as he continued the final years of his education.
.....Shortly after Suvok's 30th year, he completed his advanced studies with degrees in Warp Theory, Stellar Cartography, and Quantum Physics. He spent the summer months in contemplative meditation and traveled across Vulcan, visiting The Forge and the Fire Plains of Raal near the city of his birth. His application process to Starfleet took him to the capital of Vulcan, Shi'Kahr, for the first time, where he visited the Pelasht Temple and the Vulcan Science Academy. His last three days he spent on Mount Seleya, preparing himself mentally for his future.

.....Starfleet Academy (2398 - 2402)
.....While Suvok was prepared to begin studies outside of Vulcan and it's familiar surroundings, he was completely unprepared to deal with the number of other species, particularly humans, which surrounded him as he began his courses at the Academy. Because of his parent's isolationist views, he'd had little contact with other species for most of his life. He found the constant public emotional displays of emotion around him, regardless of how subtle, vulgar and insensitive, and his own Vulcan nature of blunt honesty and direct communication alienated him among his peers. He found little solace even among other Vulcans (which were few in number) who were also dealing with the effects of being away from the rigid structure and order of Vulcan society.
.....Despite these distractions, Suvok excelled at the Academy in his years there. He continued his education in Warp Theory and Physics, and followed those up with studies in starbase and ship engineering courses. Due to his advanced knowledge of Stellar Cartography, in his third year he was asked to teach a course on it to first year students. He developed a deeper interest in games of strategy, and became exposed to chess for the first time - in his third year he came in 2nd place at the Academy Chess Tournament, losing a final move to another Vulcan student. Suvok graduated the Academy with high honors, typical for most Vulcan students, and was in the top 1% of graduates from the 2402 graduation year.

.....Stardate 77284.05 - 1st Cadet Cruise (2402 - 2404)
.....His first Cadet assignment was aboard the U.S.S. Fitzgerald. He was assigned as a junior Science Officer under Lieutenant Edwin Burchfeld, a human officer who had excelled in Astrophysics. The ship's mission was exploration of the Hromi Cluster, noting new spatial anomalies and assisting Starfleet and indigenous races as required. Suvok excelled during this assignment, his work an increasing example of his strong work ethic and scientific knowledge, as well as his problem solving abilities.
.....However, he clashed with the majority of the rest of the crew in personal matters. The close proximity of the crew aboard ship left him in immediate contact with other species constantly, and the continual subjection to emotional outbreaks and humor frequently taxed him. His inability to connect with his shipmates left him isolated, and many times led to misunderstandings in social situations that created angst among his peers. He began to question his decision to join Starfleet.

.....Stardate 79071.53 - 2nd Cadet Assignment (2404 - 2406)
.....Despite his excellent service record where his duties and scientific prowess were concerned, his next assignment was aboard Starbase 24, again as a junior Science Officer. He surmised that the assignment was due, in part, to his inability to connect and associate with his shipmates on his previous cruise, but in the absence of evidence it was pure supposition on his part. None-the-less, he performed his duties in typical fashion, excelling at his duties and working extra hours to ensure completion of tasks and starbase functions.
.....However, he again had difficulty dealing with the non-Vulcans aboard the starbase. The accommodations weren't as cramped, and he was able to distance himself from the majority of the uncomfortable emotion displayed around him, but the vulgarity of it continued to astound him. He spend most of his free time either working or in his stateroom in meditation, and elected to avoid the Starbase Chess Tournament due to the necessitated proximity of emotionally immature species. Regardless of his own state of logic, the constant emotional bombardment began to take it's toll toward the end of his two year assignment. Frequent misunderstandings with his direct peers resulted finally in several visits to his commanding officer's office.
.....When his assignment aboard Starbase 24 was completed, he appealed to Starfleet Command to take a leave of absence to pursue the Kolinahr. He realized his childhood isolation had not granted him the abilities to withstand constant exposure to species with a basis in emotion, and required extra tutelage and meditation were he to continue his Starfleet career. With little in the regulations to allow such a request, particularly in light of the fact that the Kolinahr could take anywhere from one to five years to complete, Command decided to discharge Suvok from Starfleet with the provision that he could return when his process of "self-reevaluation" was completed.

.....Stardate 81044.42 - Return to Vulcan and Kolinahr (2406 - 2409)
.....When Suvok returned to his homeworld, he had a brief but unsatisfying reunion with his parents. They hadn't spoken to him since he'd left Vulcan, and had little to say upon his return. Even his decision to pursue Kolinahr did little to diminish the distance between them. He spent some time with his sister, who was now immersed in her advanced studies of Stellar Archaeology, before he departed for several days of meditation at Mount Seleya. When completed, he made the journey on foot across The Forge to T'Karath Sanctuary, where he spent the next three years of his life in complete isolation, meditation, and study.
.....His years working toward the achievement of Kolinahr changed him dramatically. Already, having achieved Velinahr at an early age like most Vulcans, he expounded upon these practices and delved deeply into Vulcan philosophies. He meticulously explored the concept of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. He spent hours in contemplation of Cthia, seeking the Ultimate Truth as it affected his sense of self. He became more mentally disciplined, in the face of increasing emotional exposures. These contemplations and teachings instilled a deep respect for his heritage and traditions, and he finally came to understand his parents, and their desire for isolationism - although it was still something he could never adopt.
.....At the end of his time at the T'Karath Sanctuary, he was found to have completed his path to Kolinahr through the ritual mind-meld with the Vulcan Elder T'preev. He was presented with a symbol of his completed path to wear, as was tradition - Suvok had selected the universal symbol for existential quantification, the reversed Vulcan alphabetical E.

.....Starfleet Academy Revisited (2409 - 2411)
.....His immediate course of action upon completing the Kolinahr was to return to Starfleet. His petition was granted under a conditional clause. He elected to fulfill that clause by returning to the Academy to pursue additional advanced education of Stellar Cartography and Quantum Physics. He pursued his studies with his usual diligence, and after only two years completed his Academy service with another academic distinction to his name.
.....What was equally important was how the Kolinahr had changed his perspectives - his new mental disciplines and philosophical ideals allowed him to accept emotionally immature species and their outbursts without being a drain or affecting his own state of being. He still found it difficult to connect with those around him, but his studies had granted him the knowledge and ability to handle such social interactions with tact he had lacked before.

.....Stardate 85500.02 - Assignment to Starbase 39 (2411 - 2413)
.....Once his Academy courses were complete, he spent a few weeks preparing for his next assignment, which was Starbase 39, near the Romulan Neutral Zone. He was billeted as a junior Science Officer, and spent the next two years continuing the work he'd begun prior to the pursuit of the Kolinahr. He assisted with the starbase's engineering by providing science research on the warp core, as well as numerous scientific studies into the Sierra System itself to ensure the starbase's safety and security. His performance was excellent, and the Starbase Commandant, Admiral T'Nae, forwarded recommendations for his promotion to Lieutenant when his assignment was completed.

.....Stardate 87247.08 - Assignment to Starbase Valhalla (2413)
.....Back at Starfleet Academy to compile his assignment reports and debriefing, Suvok was informed that his rank advancement was approved. With the usual ceremonies, he was promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant, and was informed that his next duty assignment would be aboard the Starbase Valhalla, which an open position for Chief Science Officer. Suvok accepted the assignment, and prepared to leave for Valhalla as soon as his de-briefings allowed.

Hobbies / Interests
.....A good portion of his Suvok's free time is spent in meditation and contemplation, which is part of continuing one's adherence to the practice of Kolinahr - he has a special holo-deck program of Mount Seleya at sunset he uses when he meditates. When not doing that, he plays Chess regularly, which includes three dimensional chess. He also plays the Vulcan game Kal-toh frequently, and enjoys any game of logic in general. He also has an affinity for ancient Vulcan music and poetry.
.....Suvok elected to train in the martial art of ponn-ifla when he reached the appropriate age in school. As a pacifist he refused to learn the more direct arts, and instead selected the newer art of ponn-ifla that utilizes the opponents own movements in a non-violent fashion. He also is proficient in the Vulcan paths of Khat (defenses against telepathic intrusion), and Vhos (the ability to interpret body language to determine the truthfulness, identity theft, or contrary acts of an individual).
.....He also has an interest into the philosophical perceptions of different species. While he has a general knowledge of most philosophical ideologies of many of the most numerous species within the Federation, he prefers to enter into discussions with individuals in an effort to perceive the direct interpretation of the philosophies in question.

Academic History and Distinctions
.....As a Vulcan, particularly with the Vulcan practice of advanced education beyond the initial years of child development, Suvok has had the opportunity to achieve several academic achievements in his short life (comparatively). Upon graduating from Vulcan academics, he already possessed advanced degrees, and his years in Starfleet Academy granted him academic distinctions in several more, including the completion of another Masters in Quantum Mechanics.

  • Doctorate Degrees
    • Quantum Physics

  • Master's Degrees (of Science)
    • Stellar Cartography
    • Quantum Mechanics

  • Additional Academic Subjects
    • Warp Theory
    • Probability Mechanics
    • Gravimetrics
    • Physical Cosmology

(Note: Stardates for the Hobus Supernova and Klingon attack at Gila IV are not correct per the "Path to 2409" database. 12th Fleet Medical's preferred Stardate calculator link displays the dates listed above as the correct Stardates.)
