SUMMARY PESONAL HISTORY:
• Jess was raised on New Paris Colonies and lived there until the age of 18. While he came from a family that could trace it's noble heritage back almost 1,000 years to the 1400's on Earth, they were of meager financial means and could not afford to send him to a University. However, due to his outstanding academics, Jess was offered full scholarships to several fine Universities, but there was only one that he was interested in and so he became a Cadet at Starfleet Academy.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BRIEF:
• While at the Academy, Jess was noted as an outgoing and well liked cadet. He split most of his off duty time between helping other cadets vent off energies at the local establishments and venting at those establishments himself.
He is an accomplished juggler and card player, is not easily angered or flustered, and has a keen intellect which he artfully integrates within his humor.

"Burning the midnight oil"
Stardate 83658.52 (Aug 13, 2409 02:08)

He entered the ship through the maintenance gangway on deck 18. This was the connection point between "the Grey's" and dry dock #5 that contained the umbilicals that provide the life support, computer core, and other needed connections between a starship and a dry dock during repairs.

In the case of the USS Grey's Harbor, it was not repairs but a full stem to stern ship-wide retrofit upgrade project that had kept the Nebula class starship latched to the dry dock for the better part of the past 35 months. And had kept him on a 60+ hours a week work schedule for the past year.

Walking down deck 18's main corridor he stopped at the clearly marked docking hatch that led to the Captains Yacht. Or would have, had there been a Captains yacht present. But it's arrival had been delayed and was now anticipated to arrive in just about 4 hours, at 06:30. He decided to forgo the turbolift and instead he climbed the open main stairway up to deck 16. This was a main thoroughfare when the ship was fully crewed, connecting 18 up through most of the crews quarters and ending on deck 11 at the main gangway.

He walked about 100 meters and turned and passed through a set of recessing doubled doors, into an area that he had been wanting to see but had just not made the time to do so until now.

The doors were the main entrance to the lower level of the Grey's auditorium. As he made his way down the main aisle that inclined down to the stage, he glanced up over his shoulder at the balcony level, accessible from deck 15 as well as from stairs leading up to it from either side of the stage. Climbing the risers and stepping onto the stage he smiled in approval at the look and feel of the finished product, the only space on the ship large enough to seat almost 800 people at any given time.

His next stop was to be 10 Forward, another area that he wished to see and to get a feel for it's ambiance and comfort. As he left the auditorium he headed for the turbolift but upon arriving remembered that it had been scheduled to be offline during Gamma shift starting at 02:00 for 45 minutes. As he turned back towards the main stairway him comm went off.

"Captain St.Duiex to the main shuttle bay, visiting Admiralty now arriving". Jess acknowledged the message and then pinged the main transporter room to have him transported to deck 4 aft and the main shuttle bay control.

The last thought that he had as the familiar buzzing sound began was what the heck would an Admiral be doing visiting the Grey's on Gamma shift...

"Burning the midnight oil – Part II"
Stardate 83658.87 (Aug 13, 2409 05:30)

His MACO security escort having stepped out first Admiral Jorel Quinn emerged from the shuttle next and paused at the hatch and smiled. “Permission to come aboard Captain”

Jess stepped forward and welcomed Quinn aboard the Gray’s with a handshake and a grin. “Admiral, it’s great to see you. Your visit is quite a surprise, to say the least. We only recently completed the recommissioning procedures and are still staffing and a few weeks away from saddling up and heading out for shakedown”

The Admiral clapped Jess on the shoulder as the two walked towards the turbolift. “Quite right Captain, it was a spur of the moment idea of mine to come and visit. I’ve been out here at Utopia attending design approval meetings for our next class of ships and realized that the Gray’s was still in dry dock so I commandeered a shuttle and dropped by.”

As they entered the turbolift Jess looked at Quinn “The bridge? Or engineering or…” Quinn smiled and as the turbolift doors closed his demeanor relaxed and he softly replied “The bridge if you don’t mind Captain. There is something that I would like to see.”

As Jess gave the command for the bridge thoughts started racing through his mind. Was there a test or certification that he missed or a procedure that he bypassed? What could Quinn want to see on a 41 year old vessel going through yet another facelift in her long Starfleet career? Was there to be a change of orders for the Gray’s? Was a surprise visit by Admiralty to a new CO a fleet tradition that he was not privy to?
He pushed the thoughts from his mind as the turbolift opened up to the bridge. Stepping out after the Admiral Jess fell in next to him, never tiring of the look, feel and even the smell of the bridge still in it’s pristine condition with everything having been replaced and upgraded with the bulkhead probably the only original part of the ship still remaining.

They had exited from the forward port turbolift with the bridge facing them. Quinn stepped along, seemingly a man on a mission as they walked in front of the conn and ops consoles, up the starboard side ramp and turned towards the observation lounge located aft of the bridge. Jess followed the Admiral as the entered the lounge. “As it should be…” Quinn noted as he move to the far side of the lounge. There, next to the viewport on the bulkhead was a plaque that Jess had not noticed before.

He stepped up next to Quinn as the Admiral reach out and lightly ran his hand over the plaque “Captain, 36 years ago a very green Ensign Quinn was aboard the Grey’s as she joined the fleet that engaged the Borg at the battle of Sector 001. This plaque is in memory of those that lost their lives during that battle, giving their last full measure in service to the UFP”.

The Admiral closed his eyes for a moment and then turned towards Jess “Captain, I am confident that you will continue the fine tradition of those CO’s that have gone before you in the center chair of the Grey’s.” Quinn stepped over to the viewport, clasped his hands behind his back and looked out onto the exterior of the starship and the dry dock that surrounded it. “Have you selected your staff yet Captain?”

Jess stepped up next to Quinn as he replied “I’ve narrowed it down to a couple of choices for each of the command staff and I plan to pull the trigger on them later this week. Would you care to review the list Sir?” The Admiral shook his head no “Captain, those are totally your decisions. My only advice is to not be afraid to step out of the sphere and go with your gut” Jess nodded acknowledgement and agreement with the advice.

Just then Quinn’s aide leaned into the entry of the Observation lounge “Admiral, it’s time. The USS Seattle is our lift back to Earth and she is awaiting your arrival for departure Sir. I’ve notified the transporter room that we would be ready in a few moments”. Quinn acknowledged the information and then shook hands with Jess. “Good luck Captain… and take care of the Grey’s, she still has many years left in her” Quinn and his aide moved into position as the Admiral tapped his comm badge “Engage”

As the Admiral and his aide beamed out Jess continued to look out upon the aft view of the USS Grey’s Ferry and watched as the Captain’s Gig arrived at the dry dock and, using its control thrusters only, slowly made its way under the Grey’s to its berth at the bottom of the saucer and out of Jess’s sight. Alpha shift would be arriving and Jess decided he would make his way down to the Crew’s mess and grab some breakfast with them before he tackled his workload for the day.

CAPTAINS LOG

"Long Day At The Office"
Stardate 83665.39 (Aug 15, 2409 19:40)

Jess tossed the PADD on the desk in his ready room, leaned back and stretched, his muscles and his mind both thankful for the break.

“Computer… Captains log, Stardate… er… computer insert present Stardate” Jess stood and walked over to Mongo’s cage, Mongo being a 12 inch Quaker Parrot who was now ensconced in Jess’s ready room. Holding out his hand Mongo jumped onto it as Jess continued his stroll around his office and continued his log. A banner day for the Grey’s as we have received the final certifications from the dock staff enabling us to begin trials and initiate a shakedown cruise. The Captain’s Gig finally arrived, I now need to come up with a name for it.”

Jess rolled his eyes at that pending task and continuedI have decided upon all of the senior staff other than the xo, either of the two final candidates would make an excellent choice for that role and would fit in well with the makeup of the rest of the staff. All of the senior staff that I’ve chosen are within a 4 week travel time to the Grey’s except for the CTAC slash Chief Security Officer who is just a bit further away. We may be able to shave that time down and meet her along the way, we will see. The Chief Engineer for the Retrofit team has accepted my offer to remain on the Grey’s as its Chief Engineering Officer”

Jess extended his hand back to Mongo’s cage and the little green and white bird hopped back into his domain. “My selection for Chief Science Office is aboard the USS Seattle that had coincidentally just left Utopia for Earth 2 days ago. She will be catching the next shuttle back this way. The COO was aboard a vessel that would be paying a call at a local Starbase within the week. Travel arrangements are being made now by my Chief of Staff to get them to Utopia or Earth. And the Chief Medical Officer is stationed at the Academy so he should arrive shortly."

Jess sat back down at his desk “For now my focus is on reviewing the crew roster and files that Starfleet provided for the Grey’s initial crew. The first wave are scheduled to arrive at 08:00 tomorrow with the rest of the crew arriving over the next 4 weeks. Once they are aboard we will head out, as of right now no defined set of orders have been received but I expect them within the week. Computer close log”

Mongo finally seemed to have awakened enough to add his comments “Computer, Captain’s Log” and then he waited for the computers reply. Quaker Parrots not being known for their patience he tried again, and then again. He would probably continue for the next few minutes waiting for the computer to respond. Jess had had Mongo’s voice pattern explicitly blocked by the computer after discovering a few logs that Mongo had vocally authored and the computer did not know how to file.

It wouldn’t be so bad if Mongo would only let go of that one phrase that Jess could not get him to forget. It's what came of Mongo just spending too much time with the Chief Engineer. Over the past month Jess had kept the two apart and had spent much of his limited relaxation time getting Mongo to quit saying what he had picked up from the Engineer… well, most of it anyway.

Finally Made it

Stardate 83680.35 (Fri Aug 21 2409 18:30)
San Francisco, Earth

He spun the wheel hard to port, released the tension on the port line and the boom swung crisply across the boat as the wind began to again fill the sail, now from the other side. Tightening up on the starboard line tilted the deck to starboard and cranking it down even further heeled the boat over more as she increased speed once again. The bow cut through the chop, salt water spraying across the boat and across his face and beard, his cap keeping the rest of his head mostly dry.

40 minutes later he had tied off the 32 foot "Bay Witch". On days when she was being especially difficult he tended to mash the two words of the name together into one. He stopped by the office and asked Lenore to have the yard pull the Witch and do a hull scan, the bilge pump was running too often to just be a leak at a seal or fitting, had to be a crack.

He made his way back to his apartment, took a shower and then sat down at his desk with a cold beer. As he began to review his messages one caught his eye right away so he popped it open and read it. The read it a second time.

Time to pull the trigger he thought as he closed the message pulled up his to-do list that he had been preparing for this moment.

He finished his beer, stood and headed back into his small galley "Computer, pull up everything you can find on the USS Grey's Harbor. And see what is out there on a Captain Jess St.Duiex"

After 10 years he was finally getting assigned to a Starship. And to a Captain that he had graduated with at the Academy, who obviously was riding the fast track to promotions. Bill had just recently received his promotion to Commander himself, but he had gone to med school after the Academy and there was no fast track there. Then his internship and finally, his posting in the field.

Except it wasn't the field, it was back to the Academy as the assistant Chief Medical Officer. Which was not at all how he had envisioned his career going.

But now... Now he was headed to space on the USS Grey'sHarbor and Doctor William "Wild Bill" Anderson was just assigned as the Chief Medical Officer aboard.

"Let's get in, lets get out!"

USS Gray's Harbor, Earth Spacedock
Stardate: 83774.78 (Mon Sep 28 2409 08:00 GF Time)

Jess rose from his seat on the bridge and, nodded to Tallasa join him. He walked up behind Lieutenant Lo'Cot and clapped him on the shoulder "Nice job docking Badger, you are a real pro with the control thrusters."

On the main viewer of the Bridge was the view of the inside of the mammoth cavern of Earth Spacedock. The scale of it was always impressive, especially if it was your first time seeing it. And right about now there were 80 cadets from the freshman class getting ready to make their way aboard for their very first cruise aboard a Federation Starship.

Leaving the bridge, Jess and the XO headed to his ready-room as Jess called over his shoulder "Lieutenant Commander Sini you have the conn". Crewman Daniels was exiting the ready room as they approach and was looking up at her Captain "I left them on your credenza sir" Jess noted his thanks to her as Daniels then turned to the Andorian and gave her a warm smile "May I get you anything as well Commander?" Tallasa did a forced smile in return and declined the offer and she and Jess entered the office, the door swooshing closed and effectively ending the opportunity of any further dialog with Crewman Daniels.

As Jess noted the carafe of coffee and roast beef sandwich sitting on his credenza, he motioned the XO to take a seat as he himself sat behind his desk, adjusting his collar where the material chaffed his neck. "Tal, you gotta give Daniels a break. I get that she may be overly perky and attentive but it's her first posting and she is eager to please"

"I don't know Captain, there is something about her that just strikes me the wrong way" said the Andorian, leaning back in her chair. Tallasa was unusually broad shouldered and muscular for an Andorian but that came from a strenuous regime of exercise and fitness. She had also picked up the sport of weight lifting at the academy and she had stuck with it since. She was definitely unique.

Looking over briefly at his Parrot, Jess noted that Daniels had also left apple slices for the bird, which Mongo was enjoying immensely. Holding out his hand towards the cage Jess continued in his defense of Daniels "C'mon Tal, anyone who leaves fresh fruit for Mongo can't be that bad, can she?" Jess ended with a cheesy smile to which the XO let out a snort and a pfft.

"Okay... I'll leave it alone. Lets change gears. What are your thoughts on the shift and the docking? I was particularly impressed with the Lieutenant's ease of use of the thrusters, he has a very soft touch. Good call on him Tal"

Tallasa grinned at her CO. Having been the one to recommend Lo'Cot to Jess for the lead conn officer post she was pleased with the vindication of her recommendation. "Yes sir, he's quite the pilot. Having made the jump from the Yellowstone to starships only 2 years ago I would say Lo'Cot is just something of a natural born pilot."

Jess and Tallasa then got down to business and spent the next 20 minutes in conversation about the normal tasks required whenever a starship docked at any facility. Finishing with the details Jess and the Commander rose, Jess walking with her to the door "Give them all 30 minutes to find their bunks and look out their portholes and then have them report back to the shuttle bay. We will do the welcome gig and then start the tour."

Tallesa acknowledged his orders and was stepping out the door when Jess stopped her. "One more thing Tal, I think you were right, so lets go ahead and cut gamma and beta shifts loose for a few hours to get out and see the spacedock and vendors. But I still want us underway and clearing the portal by 17:00, anyone missing the departure will be looking for a new line of work."

Acknowledging his last orders with a smile and a "Yes Sir" Tallesa departed as Jess headed back to his desk to avail himself of the coffee and sandwich that Daniels had brought from the Officers Mess. "I kinda like that Daniels is so efficient".

Enjoying the momentary break Jess reflected on his latest orders.

Most Captains might have been a little bit irked at receiving last minute orders to change course back to Earth, put in to Spacedock, and pick up 80 cadets waiting to tag along on the shakedown cruise of the Grey's Harbor. But Jess was pleased. There would be information and experiences over the duration of the planned 6 week cruise that cadets did not normally get to enjoy.

The only concern he had was that the crew would have its hands full, not only with testing, but with cadets looking over their shoulders and questioning everything. And all the while also getting to know and work with each another as well. Jess made a mental note to raise that concern with his Senior Staff at this evenings meeting.

He would continue running the twice daily staff meetings and crew briefings for the next week and then start tapering them back to a more normal and sustainable tempo.

Standing up and adjusting his collar were it was rubbing he headed to the door, cursing the new uniform the whole way and realizing too late that Mongo was repeating his every word. Damn!

Jess was headed to a meeting with Vice Admiral Utep to discuss where the Grey's Harbor might be headed once they finished shakedown and delivered the 80 freshmen cadets back safe and sound.
