This evening we received new orders, and tomorrow the Reliant will be returning to her original role, that of an exploration vessel. We are to set off toward the B'Tran Cluster and then proceed through it toward the galactic rim. Our mission is a simple one, to explore the previously unexplored and to seek first contact with other warp capable species. This was the reason that I originally joined Starfleet, and I'm glad to know the Reliant will be used as something other than a vessel of war.

This account exists primarily to provide background, from another officers perspective, of events which occurred in the backstory of Aihah prior to joining the U.S.S. Nova Scotia crew. Loose details of this material are likely available to those on the Nova Scotia via rumor, or if they hold command positions, strict fact.

We ship out this morning, but already this mission has offered up a surprise. This morning we received the last of the crew and equipment transfers, and discovered that a number of Romulans and one Romulan Runabout among them as a result of a joint operations initiative with the Romulan Republic. Many in the crew met this information with somewhat less than enthusiasm. Commander Shala was quick to provide... direction, to those with doubts, and for that I'm thankful. Her ability to redirect inappropriate energies before they come to a head is one of the reasons I originally made her my first officer, and it's good to have my assessment of her confirmed.

This mission is likely going to see us away from familiar space for months if not more, and we can't afford to allow personal feelings to run the ship.

The ship and crew are performing well, though I have noticed some tension. This mission is one of exploration and peace, but the thought of traveling through Borg contested space is fearsome to many. The situation hasn't caused any difficulties yet, but I intend to recommend to Commander Shala that Counselor Kysse look into it. We've just begun this journey, and I want to ensure that ship and crew remain in good, working order.

My earlier concerns about tension among the crew seems to have born fruit, though of a disappointing sour sort. An incident broke out today between Crewman Zywsag and Sublieutenant Vaalet. There were no serious injuries, but the image presented to the rest of the crew is a dangerous one. Commander Shala conferred with Chief Engineer Phahr, and it was determined that Zywsag instigated the incident because she didn't appreciate Vaalet's refusal to allow her access to the Romulan Runabout during her maintenance shift.

Commander Shala has confined Crewman Zywsag to her quarters pending a psychological review by Counselor Kysse.

A Borg Cube passed within 200,000 kilometers of the Reliant, this morning. Thankfully Lieutenant Torkas was on sensors, and detected them while we were surveying a class L planet. The Reliant was maneuvered to the far side of one of the larger satalites orbitting the planet. The Cube passed near enough to get a reading on the planet, and thankfully chose to pass by.

After the Borg left the area, we completed our survey of the planet, discovering a pre-warp civilization...

All indications are of a largely pre-industrial civilization, with a group on the southern continent experimenting with steam power. We will remain in system for a few more days to gather further information before moving on

Our Romulan Runabout proved extremely useful during our continued observation of the civilization below. Lieutenant Aihah agreed to shuttle a small group into the atmosphere, taking advantage of the Runabout's cloaking technology to conceal closer investigation of the inhabitants.

The people of this planet are fascinating. Their bodies are covered with what looks like colorful scales, and their mouths extend several inches from the front of their skull. They appear to be a single gendered species, which breeds by ingesting the pollen of a plant which looks somewhat like wheat via a tertiary tube accessed through their mouth. Overall the species looks to have avian ancestry.

This sort of work is why I joined Starfleet, and I wish the Prime Directive allowed for an even closer inspection of this species.

We have gathered enough information and samples from this planet, and we will leave orbit at 2100 hours.

It appears that we've underestimated the Borg's presence in this sector of space. Either due to our transmissions with the Runabout, or in some other way we haven't determined, the Borg detected our presence and sent a Sphere. After a brief but deadly battle we managed to fool their sensors, thanks in no small part to the stealth tactics of our Romulan crew members, and escape the engagement. Three crew members are in critical condition, and over twenty others have less serious injuries.

We're on the move currently, with the Borg Sphere in pursuit. Their sensors seem to be having trouble keeping a solid lock on our position thanks to unusual radiation from a nearby anomaly. An anomaly that the cataloging of, if not for the Borg, is the exact reason we're out here. Of course, the radiation is making it just as difficult for us to track the Sphere, so this anomaly is far from sufficient camouflage.

The idea that there are no other Starfleet vessels to provide support is wearing on the crew, but I feel that they are performing admirably under this stress.

We will maintain yellow alert until ship and crew are no longer in immediate danger.

We've been played our game of cat and mouse with the Borg for as long as we could. The anomaly is no longer providing it's services to us, and we're in a straight up race now. We're heading at best speed toward the transwarp gate in the Cestus sector, but the Borg are matching our best speed. The trip will take us nearly twenty days at transwarp, but Lieutenant Commander Phahr tells me drive won't last nearly that long.

The pursuit by the Borg continues, and the stress on the ship is extensive. We've managed to extend the gap by switching into and out of transwarp and using gravitational bodies and stellar debris to confuse our Borg pursuers. This constant pressure on the ship is taking it's toll though, and I have received a report of micro-fractures on the starboard nacelle as well as a score of maintenance needs that are piling up faster than they can be performed.

The crew continues to perform well, and all matters of on-board unruliness have ceased in the face of our current situation. Counselor Kysse reports that the stresses of this scenario have not resulted in more than the expected number of requests for her time.

Captain's log, Stardate 86807.55, Captain Zian K. Zirzek reporting.

The Borg Sphere has been destroyed, but not without a price.

Lieutenant Chag reports that an undetected fault during the installation of the main deflector array resulted in the system going offline while deuterium collection was under way. At the time the Reliant was relying on an asteroid belt rich in Duranium to provide protection from Borg sensors, and the loss of the main deflector resulted in an impact of micro-particles. The majority of the ship weathered the situation, but the starboard nacelle was already compromised, and the micro-fractures resulted in a tear along the port side.

The Reliant began venting warp plasma into space, and the Borg were alerted to our presence. The damage was too extensive to repair in time, and we were forced to engage the Borg directly. Lieutenant Commander Odallu proposed a plan to detonate the duranium in the asteroid field after luring the Borg Sphere into it.

When the Sphere arrived the Reliant began an assault, hoping to draw the Borg into a close pursuit. Heavy damage was suffered by the Reliant, while the Sphere suffered little, but after a short battle it was in position and the shields were dropped in order to allow the transporters to sent a number of compressed air cylinders into space as fuel, along with an armed plasma warhead.

The detonation of a large portion of the asteroid belt's duranium content crippled the Borg Sphere, and to a lesser degree the Reliant. Even in our wounded state, the crew rallied and the Sphere fell under the assault of the remaining weapons the Reliant had to bare.

With the immediate threat gone, damage and loss assessment has begun. Reports indicate that the Reliant has lost at least a full half of her crew.

Her crew honors her with their valor and dedication in the face of so great a foe.
