Biography

Caius Ne'Ral was born on Romulus in 2368 to the newly appointed Proconsul (and future Praetor) Ne’Ral. Throughout his academic years, Caius studied engineering and physics, and at the age of 18 he was commissioned as a junior engineering crewman aboard the scout ship IRW Oraculum.

In 2387, when Caius was just 19, the Hobus Supernova obliterated Romulus and Remus. Among those lost in the cataclysm were most of Caius's friends and family. Whether any of them were fortunate enough to escape the disaster remains unknown. Since then, Caius has harboured a deep resentment of the Federation for their inability to prevent the destruction of all that he held dear; a hatred that is matched only by his disdain of living under the oppressive rule of Empress Sela and the Tal Shiar.

For almost two decades, Caius and the rest of the crew of the Oraculum were outlaws, constantly on the run from the Tal Shiar, engaging in hit and run skirmishes and smuggling contraband in exchange for basic provisions. It was in these twenty years that Caius climbed the ship’s ranks, rising to become Subcommander of the Oraculum. In 2407, when they heard of the remote colony on Virinat, away from the prying eyes and tyranny of the Tal Shiar, many of the Oraculum's crew decided to settle there. Hanging up his utility belt and plasma screwdriver, Caius resigned from his life as an engineer and took up bee-keeping on the colony, putting his anger, his hatred, and his heart-ache behind him.

He hoped to live out the rest of his days on the peaceful world of Virinat... That was until 2409, when the Tal Shiar and the elusive Elachi obliterated the settlement, once again destroying everything Caius cared about. Managing to escape in the old, rusting IRW Oraculum, Caius and a handful of survivors fled the devastation of their home and out across the sector, taking up a nomadic lifestyle among the stars.

It was on their travels that they encountered Flotilla Twelve, a rag-tag fleet of the burgeoning Romulan Republic. Seeking refuge among the fleet, the crew of the Oraculum and the survivors of Virinat requested citizenship with the Republic, and Caius offered his services as an engineer to the fleet.

Upon joining Flotilla Twelve, Caius requested that the IRW Oraculum be given an overhaul and rechristened the RRW Novus Initium - New Beginnings.

Philosophy

Although his father’s legacy shows that shortly after being elected to office, Proconsul Ne’Ral attempted to use Ambassador Spock’s ideas for reunification as a plot to invade Vulcan, Caius Ne’Ral does not share his father’s perspective. Ambassador Spock gave his life trying to save Romulus and Remus from the Hobus Supernova, and although Caius despises the Federation for not acting soon enough to stop it, he has great respect for Spock’s actions. In honour of his memory, Caius wishes to see the ambassador’s hope of a unification between the Vulcans and the Romulans one day come to fruition.

Despite being a supporter of the reunification movement and admiring D’Tan’s tenacity in establishing the Republic, Caius resents the fact that they must be aligned with the Federation and the Klingons. It may have been twenty years ago, but Caius will never forgive the Federation for their inability to act, too tied up by their beloved directives to prevent the Hobus disaster. As for the Klingons... Relations between the Romulans and Klingons have always been strained, and he finds it hard to believe that the Klingon Empire has the Romulan Republic’s best interests at heart.

However, accepting help from both the Federation and Klingon Empire is a necessary evil in his eyes to his build a better future for the Romulan people. The Federation have proved indispensable in establishing New Romulus on Dewa III and providing aid and support to the Republic, and the Klingons have become a valuable ally in the fight against Empress Sela and the Tal Shiar. He may appreciate the support that these allies have shown his people, but Caius still hopes for a future when the Romulans will once again stand as an independent power in the galaxy.
