Name: Sanek
Gender: Male
Race: Vulcan
Class: Science Officer
Rank: Vice Admiral (Lt. JG in 12th)
Ship: U.S.S. James E. McDonald

Assignment: 12th Fleet
Division: Exploration
Unit: Delta Squadron

Brief Information
.....Sanek is a Vulcan who has dedicated his life to the pursuit and study of cosmic science. Through a series of assignments in Starfleet as executive and chief Science Officers aboard deep space research vessels, he has distinguished himself so that his desire to command a science vessel of his own to pursue his goal of deep space research was realized in on Stardate 87026.84 when he was given command of a vessel he had previously served on, the U.S.S. Nautilus. From that date forward, his forays into deep space have progressed deeper into unknown regions of the Alpha and Beta quadrants, studying unknown subspace and cosmic phenomenon.

Personality
.....Outwardly, Sanek is the quintessential Vulcan. He is completely and wholly logical, and keeps to his rigid discipline in logic at all times. Supremely analytical, he is quick to make decisions and pursues any logical solution to a problem immediately and without recourse. His chief loyalties could be said to lay with science; however he does have a strong sense of duty to Starfleet, and to his crew, many of whom have served with him for most of his career.
.....Sanek is also deeply philosophical, and spends a good deal of time in meditation specifically related to philosophical study. He has a profound respect for those who have had a direct influence on modern Vulcan life, such as Ambassador Spock, Surak, and Ambassador Sarek. Like many Vulcans, Sanek sees the Romulans as kindred minds based on their ancestral roots, and wishes that the two races could come to some accord in the future. He practices typical Vulcan traditions and social protocols, while at the same time interested in other species traditional values on philosophy, religion, sociology, and death.
.....He does, however, have somewhat of a streak of rebellion in him at times, particularly toward a specific few Vulcan traditions and social norms. This is due in some part to the exposure to many other cultures and races throughout his career, but it's seeds began in Sanek's early life with comments made by his father (which Sanek thought wholly illogical at the time). It is this rebellious nature which makes him consider other alternatives upon occasion, and is in no small part also one primary reason for his relationship with Solida T'yra, his Chief Medical Officer.

Family Information
.....Sanek was raised predominantly by his mother. His father was a Starfleet Science Officer, and as such was away from Vulcan for great lengths of time during Sanek's formative and teenage years.

  • Father
    • Saeran - A career Starfleet Science Officer who chose Starfleet over a Vulcan Science Academy position.
      • Current Status: Deceased (February, 2409. Acute diagnosis of Choriocytosis)

  • Mother
    • T'laris - A highly educated and gifted scientist with a posting at the Vulcan Science Academy. Achieved the Kolinahr early in life prior to marriage to Sanek's father.
      • Current Status: Deceased (January, 2410. Late onset of acute Tuvan Syndrome)

  • Other Family Members
    • Selov - Sanek's Uncle - his mother's older brother (by six years). A career diplomat. Sanek has had little contact with Selov since his childhood.
      • Current Status: Living (63 years of age, lives on Vulcan in the capital city Shi'Kahr)

Brief Biography

.....Childhood and Early Life (2361 - 2394)
.....Sanek was born to Vulcan parents on the Vulcan homeworld during the winter of Federation year 2361. His parents followed typical Vulcan heritage and raised their son traditionally Vulcan, studying science, pure logic and mathematics from an early age. As Sanek's father was a Science Officer in Starfleet, much of Sanek's youth was governed by his mother... an accomplished Vulcan woman in her own right who not only was a member of the Vulcan Science Academy, but had also completed the Kolinahr some years before Sanek's birth. During his early years, Sanek showed an early aptitude for space sciences and mathematics, as well as biological sciences, and distinguished himself early with high academic grades which resulted in his initial school graduation in the top of his class.
.....When Sanek was twenty years old, his father further distinguished the family by being assigned to the newly commissioned U.S.S. Stargazer as a Science Officer. This duty, however, led him to be away from Vulcan for even longer periods of time. Sanek's mother meanwhile had further duties with her Academy assignment which kept her away at the Science Academy for long hours, and as such Sanek learned to be self reliant early in his life.
.....As Sanek continued to grow and study, his initial captivation of the stars and space began to culminate in a deep desire to explore the depths of space. As such, he eventually resolved to follow in his fathers footsteps and enlist with Starfleet when he graduated and came of age rather than pursue a possible acceptance at the Vulcan Science Academy. He acknowledged to himself that this was also partly due to his admiration of Ambassador Spock, whom Sanek had met once early in 2387 when he was twenty-seven years old. Ambassador Spock was on Vulcan at the time with the appeal for the Vulcan Science Academy to assist with his plan to develop a solution to the Hobus supernova, and his mother arranged for Sanek to meet with Ambassador Spock between appointments. It was shortly after this that the Hobus star went supernova and Ambassador Spock was lost. Due to the high regard and respect Sanek felt for Spock the loss was difficult for him, forcing him to come to terms for the first time in his adult life with an emotion response to a situation. His father's ship was sent to assist the Romulan survivors and to help with colonization and was gone on this mission for the next two years.

.....Despite the turmoil the Hobus supernova caused the Federation and all the rest of known space, the remaining years of Sanek's life leading to his academic graduation were relatively quiet. He excelled at mathematics, astrogation and astrophysics, and he continued his study of biology and exo-biology. He kept updated on the Romulan situation, in part due to his father's involvement but also due to the fact that he, like many Vulcans, felt a kinship with the Romulans and believed that a bonding of the two races would be mutually beneficial to both. He graduated in 2394 in the top five percent of his class, and immediately applied to Starfleet. With his academic excellence his application was approved shortly afterward, and he prepared for his new life as a Starfleet Cadet. His journey to Earth was intriguing to Sanek as it was the first time he'd experienced space travel, and with that voyage he knew without a doubt that he had chosen the correct path for his future.

.....Starfleet Academy (2394 - 2398)
.....The next four years of Sanek's life were spent in deep study and application of his education in preparation for his career in Starfleet. He spent much of his free time in the study of further science subjects, and any elective classes he was able to schedule for himself always revolved around the further study of cosmic sciences and mathematics. With his obvious aptitude for mathematics in particular, he was approached to assist other students as a tutor, a responsibility which he accepted, as it contributed to the greater good.

.....Cadet Assignments (2398 - 2403)
.....Sanek graduated from the academic portion of Starfleet Academy soon afterwards with distinctive marks in Science. Shortly afterward, Sanek received his first assignment aboard a ship, the U.S.S. Grayling, a Shikhar light cruiser assigned to the Delta Volanis Cluster in 2398. As the ship's Cadet Science Officer he was responsible for mapping and studying anomalous spacial readings and gravitonic fluctuations. He performed excellently, and continued aboard the Grayling as a Science Officer for a second Cadet term. His work allowed him to be transferred to Galactic Exploration Command in 2400 aboard the U.S.S. Rhode Island. This assignment was a year long voyage into deep space along the Hromi Cluster for exploration and science research. Sanek further distinguished himself during this assignment, and as such on the return to Earth he was assigned to the U.S.S. Nautilus as a Cadet Science Officer on it's continued exploration of the Delta Volanis Cluster.
.....It was during this assignment that Sanek met his first obstruction to his career path. The ship's captain, an Andorian named Rutiis, apparently came from a background that continued to harbor resentment against Vulcans - despite almost two hundred years of peace between the two races. Sanek's assignment as Cadet Science Officer rankled the Captain... and he made it well known to Sanek that he had protested the assignment once Sanek assumed his duties. This personality conflict, which was all the more frustrating for the Captain due to Sanek's refusal to rebut or otherwise respond to, eventually resulted in Sanek disobeying an order during a crisis involving a collapsing singularity deep in the Cluster that threatened the safety of the ship and it's crew. After making the correct calculations, he presented the results to the Captain who refused to believe them. Knowing that the ship and crew's safety was at stake, Sanek then acted, after which he was relived of duty. Believing in the sanctity of command and it's logical design, Sanek refused appeal when relieved of duty and spent the return to Earth confined to quarters.

.....Astrophysics Professor (2403 - 2404)
.....The resultant inquiry found Sanek absolved of guilt after the data and scenario had been investigated, and resulted in Captain Rutiis being re-assigned elsewhere due to Starfleet regulation 619, stating his personal prejudices resulted in an inability to objectively command.
.....Because of the hearing, and the length of time required to collect the data, Sanek was reassigned to Starfleet Academy where he spent the academic year of 2403 as an associate professor of astrophysics. This allowed Sanek the opportunity to continue graduate courses in other programs, which he pursued with renewed vigor, as he had made the logical decision during his experience on the U.S.S. Nautilus that his continued research would be better served if he pursued his own ship command. He began taking courses enroute to a future potential command, using his free time to take additional classes as the need required.

.....Kobayashi Maru
.....As is always the case, near the end of his initial command classes he took the Kobayashi Maru exam. During the exam he attempted a rather unique solution by penetrating the Neutral Zone at maximum impulse power, and then boosting the ship's power arrays so that a tractor beam could lock on to the Kobayashi Maru at extreme range. He then attempted to warp out of the Neutral Zone... but resultant attacks by Klingon warships had damaged the ship badly enough that warp speed was no longer possible unless the tractor beam was disabled. Rather than leave the Kobayashi Maru to it's fate, Sanek turned and chose to attempt to give the Kobayashi Maru time to fix it's engines as he fought the Klingons. The end result was typical.

.....Return to Space (2404 - 2407)
.....With his cadet class of 2404 having an average grade higher than previous graduating classes for the last several years, it paved the way for Sanek to once again be bound for the stars... and after a few inquiries Sanek was once again assigned to the U.S.S. Grayling, this time as Chief Science Officer. For the next three years Sanek served with distinction as the vessel continued to explore the Arucanis Arm and Hromi Cluster. During his assignment, as was his habit, he used his free time for academics where he continued with his command class requirements. He finally completed the academic portion of command late in the year 2407. Shortly afterward, his third year with the Grayling was completed, and he returned to Starfleet for the meticulous examination of his service record to date, his performance aboard the Grayling, and the final overview of his command requirement scores. After this was completed, Sanek went back to Vulcan for a short time to visit with his mother and father, who was home on leave due to contracting Choriocytosis.
.....Upon his return to Earth, Starfleet Command informed him that his service record to date was immaculate, and that with the completion of his command requirements he was being given his first command. Somewhat ironically, his first command was the very ship from which he was relived of duty: the U.S.S. Nautilus. His orders were to patrol the Sirius and Regulus Sectors and assist Starfleet wherever there was need, and to continue scientific research and exploration where ordered in the Delta Volanis Cluster and Arucanis Arm. His conduct would be evaluated at the end of a year of service, to convene at years end, 2408.

.....His First Command - U.S.S. Nautilus (2407 - 2408)
.....Sanek commanded the Nautilus for the next twelve months, through several exploration assignments and a few diplomatic assignments. Several discoveries within both expanses were noteworthy, and his continued study of the sectors of space in question fed the Sciences Division with new data on several cosmic phenomenon whereas neutron stars, white dwarf stars, quantum slipstream mechanics, and the cosmic makeup of the Delta Volanis Cluster's outer dust particles.
.....The Khitomer Accords, having long been discarded by the Klingons, were broken... and despite not being a combat vessel Sanek was called upon several times to assist with the continuing threat of war with the Klingons and the Gorn. This resulted in Sanek's first brush with ship to ship combat in a position of command, with occasional small engagements that Sanek handled with typical Vulcan precision and stoicism. His first true battle situation occurred at Starbase 24 during a Klingon attack of the base, during which again the Nautilus performed excellently. However, damage to the ship resulted in several crew member lives lost and many wounded.
.....Near the end of the year, Sanek brought the Nautilus back to Earth and spacedock for a repair and refit. His past year's experience was intensely scrutinized by Starfleet, and his actions were found to be in keeping with the best Starfleet traditions, with exemplary conduct by himself and his crew under occasionally difficult situations. Sanek was given a leave, which he spent again on Vulcan with his mother as his father had died due to complications of Choriocytosis during his twelve month voyage. Sanek's father had transferred his katra to his wife prior to his death, and the rare occurrence of this procedure caused Sanek to spent a bit longer on Vulcan than was originally planned to assist his mother with the after affects of the transfer.

.....Deep Space Research Begins (2408 - 2409)
.....Finally, in early 2409, Sanek returned to Earth and Starfleet. He was granted full command status, and given command of the newly commissioned starship U.S.S. Yukon, an Aurora class research vessel. In preparation of his new command he was given preference as to his command and bridge officer selection. Rather than select a new crew, he elected to allow the officers with which he had served aboard the Nautilus, several of which had served with him on his Cadet Cruises, the choice of assignment. Almost unanimously they chose to continue their service under his command, with only one officer deciding to pursue further academic courses for an engineering career.
.....His first command began with several science expeditions into the Arucanis Arm to catalog spatial anomalies as well as provide relief support for the Romulans when needed. As Sanek had already found during his command of the Nautilus, the ability to make decisions based on scientific analysis as required without the necessity to confer with a higher authority - aside from Starfleet when required - allowed him to pursue his cosmic research directly and without distraction.

.....The Alpha Centauri Institute (2409 - 2410)
.....With the scientific research of the cosmos foremost in his professional career, Sanek soon sought assignment to the Alpha Centauri Institute, a contracting division of Starfleet that focused primarily on confidential science projects and deep space research. This request was soon granted based on he and his crew's scientific accomplishments. While at the Institute, his performance was typical, and he was soon granted a position within the Board of Directors where he oversaw personnel as a secondary responsibility. His continued research of the Arucanis Arm and the Delta Volanis Cluster continued to provide further details on the nature of both expanses, and he was asked to lecture at the Academy on his findings on two occasions.
.....Midway through his year with the ACI Sanek took a short leave to tend to the affairs of his family when his mother was revealed to have advanced stages of Tuvan Syndrome which she had kept to herself for several years. Prior to her death, she underwent kal-tor-pan and had her katra transferred to the vre-katra that had been prepared for her. Sanek undertook the required final requests of his mother, and upon their completion he returned to his crew.
.....Six months into his assignment with the ACI, Sanek was ordered to conduct a two month research project on spacial anomalies within the Afehirr Nebula. The distance, and length on station, required a temporary reassignment to the research vessel U.S.S. Archimedes, a modified Hope research vessel. While in the nebula, Sanek and his research team cataloged more than twenty anomalies that advanced Starfleet's understanding of how specific anomalies form and their internal composition.

.....The U.S.S. Alan Shepard
.....After the temporary assignment was concluded at the Afehiir Nebula, Sanek was assigned command of a newly commissioned Discovery class vessel, the U.S.S. Alan Shepard. This new vessel, based on the original design schematics of the Intrepid class starships, enabled Sanek and his crew to pursue research in the depths of deep space for longer periods of time due to it's larger berthing, more advanced science package, and higher warp speed. Sanek was allowed the honor of naming the vessel, which he chose to name after the well known Earth astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard. With this new command, Sanek began studying phenomenon and anomalies within the Eridan Belt and Khazon Cluster, along with his continued studies of the Delta Volanis Cluster and Arucanis Arm.

.....Delta Volanis Anomaly DC-8538-AA
.....On Stardate 87444.61 Sanek departed on an expedition into the Delta Volanis Sector to catalog three anomalies. Two were routine... one was a newly forming star system within a dense dust cloud, while the second was a small molecular hydrogen cloud that enveloped three star systems in various staged of birth. However, the third was much more interesting, and proved to be a naturally occurring unstable wormhole. While studying the phenomenon, the wormhole collapsed into a singularity, which almost immediately enveloped the vessel within it's gravitational field. While escaping the field the ship suffered near catastrophic damage and 89 crew members were injured. A subsequent Admiralty Hearing was held which exonerated Sanek of any negligence. Repairs to the U.S.S. Alan Shepard were estimated to take two standard years.
.....Sanek also began a somewhat hesitant (at first) relationship with Solida during this time, making the decision to pursue the attachment he'd begun to feel for her years before. He made this decision primarily due to his own private convictions about Vulcan heritage and the idea that logic alone was only the beginning of wisdom, a philosophy somewhat quietly supported by Ambassador Spock before his loss.

.....Transfer to 16th Mobile Fleet (2411)
.....Shortly after the Delta Volanis incident, Sanek requested, and was granted, a transfer to the newly formed 16th Mobile Fleet due to personnel changes within the ACI. The re-assignment came with the added responsibility of being the Executive Officer of the organization, in part due to his scientific knowledge and experience, but also due to serving previously with Admiral Allahweh Felth, the 16th's Commanding Officer.
.....This change allowed him to continue his scientific research into deep space, and to allow him and his crew to remain on station for long periods of time, he was re-assigned to the newly commissioned U.S.S. James E. McDonald, a Nimbus class deep space vessel due to his previous command being under extensive repairs and refitting. His primary task was the study of the Delta Volanis anomaly that had almost destroyed his previous vessel. Continued research into this phenomenon took the majority of his time.

.....Transfer to the 12th Fleet (2412)
.....Already in a state of flux due to increased pressure from Starfleet and a constantly shifting command structure, eventually the 16th was disbanded eighteen months after Sanek joined. The different departments were absorbed by other Starfleet divisions, and as a result Sanek was reassigned to the 12th Fleet's Exploration Division, where his primary mission changed somewhat to include deep space missions into the Rolor Nebula, Betreka Nebula, and Zenas Expanse.

Hobbies / Interests
.....Sanek has a keen interest in science. This is of course his chosen profession and career, but for him it is also such a deep interest that he spends considerable amounts of time in the study of science. When not studying science, he has an interest in music, and can play the Vulcan lyre. He also has a keen interest in the game kal-toh. Sanek studied the Vulcan martial art ponn-ifla during his middle years - a defensive style that uses the opponent's attacks against him.
.....In his private moments, Sanek also has a deep interest in philosophy, and how it is perceived and explored by other cultures and societies. While Sanek is not in any way religious, he, like all Vulcans, can feel the Universe and it's vastness about him as an immense, living thing, which is what drives him to study the Universe and it's phenomenon.

Academic History and Distinctions
.....Prior to his entering Starfleet at the age of 33, Sanek spent much time in deep study of space sciences, as well as elective courses in Zoology and Exobiology. His years in the Academy honed his academic skills, and it was there that he achieved his doctorate degrees in Astrophysics and Stellar Physics. His full list of academic degrees is as follows:

  • Doctorate Degrees
