Name: Trajan Diades
Race: Trill
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Height: 1.93 meters
Birth date: October 13, 2367
Birth Place: Trill
Career: Engineer
Rank: Starfleet Captain [Ens. Engineering, Delta, 12th Fleet]

Trajan Diades was a fun-loving and idealistic child when he decided his ultimate goal in life was to be joined with a symbiont. For many of his people, it was the most important thing a person could do. For many others, it was meaningless, but for Trajan, it represented everything he could possibly imagine as valuable or important.

He submitted his application and started the various ritual preparation processes and was added to an eligibility list. On the day he was informed he was to be a Host, he was elated. He reported to the hospital and eagerly awaited his new life. Yet it was not to be.

Trajan was prepped for the implantation as was the symbiont. He lay on the operating table with his belly cut open and the symbiont was placed inside the cavity the doctors expertly created. Moments after the symbiont made contact, however, it recoiled and began to spasm. The symbiont was quickly removed and a new applicant was contacted. Despite the involved screening process, they missed something terribly important.

A new set of doctors were called in to close up the open wound in Trajan’s mid section and start the study into the problem. His chances of survival were slim and they only hoped to keep him comfortable until the end came. However, Trajan’s condition stabilized and he was eventually released from hospital care.

While it was a surprise to everyone in the operating room, it was not the first time this had happened. There were historical notes on early attempts to join symbionts with other species and this was the most common cause. The first conclusion was that Trajan was not completely Trill. The doctors immediately performed a DNA study that looked at very specific genes that, quite honestly, they should have checked for prior to the surgery but somehow was missed.

What they found shocked the Diades family and left Trajan a very bitter young man. The diagnosis: a tiny strand of Klingon DNA. Apparently one of Trajan’s ancestors had relations with a Klingon that resulted in a child.

While the family maintained it was undoubtedly rape and claimed to know nothing of it, Trajan found himself unwilling to forgive his family for hiding such a grave error, his people for failing to detect such a terrible secret, and the symbionts for subjugating his people, making them just cattle for their purpose.

Trajan had been in contact with the symbiont for long enough, however, to receive much of the symbionts memories and knowledge. This gave him a tremendous advantage that he used to propel him through Starfleet – the best avenue he could find to separate him from his family and people.
However, the contact also left him emotionally and physically scarred. His wounds healed poorly and he was left with a scarred abdomen. In the academy, one of the doctors offered to heal the scar, he chose to keep it as a reminder of his past.

Trajan’s history in Starfleet is often an exercise in obscurity, often eschewing accolades and rewards, preferring to let someone else take credit for his accomplishments. For him, the work was enough. He served on several great ships under great captains and always found the engine room to be a place of comfort and solace. He could often be found in his off time crawling through Jeffries tubes and discovering seldom visited parts of whatever ship he was on.

After cultivating hatred for 9 years, he met Merida Dax in the lounge on his ship. Dax was enroute to a new Trill colony as an advisor, but talked at length with Trajan about his time in Starfleet. Through the course of conversation, Trajan gained a better understanding of who he and his people were. Dax showed genuine remorse for Trajan’s disappointment and helped him overcome his hatred and anger.

When Trajan was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, he invited his parents to the promotion ceremony. It was the first contact they had since he left almost 10 years ago.

With this change of heart, Trajan steered his career more toward command than the engine room. This was partly due to the realization that there was a practical limit on the rank he could hold in the engine room, even though there wasn’t an official limit in place. There had to be room to move up before he could move up. He found that room in command.

Eventually attaining the rank of Captain, Trajan took command of the Odyssey class operations cruiser, U.S.S. Neil Armstrong. He commands the ship with the care he gave his career, drawing on the bits of life memories he gained from his momentary contact with a symbiont, the exuberance and activity of his youth and early career, and the moderated efficiency of his later career, Trajan was able to command his crew in the fashion of the great leaders that came before him.

He sees regards every success as significant and every failure a point of learning. His favorite times aboard his ship are spent in the crew lounge and get-togethers in the holodeck. He eventually began corresponding with his one-time-almost symbiont who helped him untangle some of the more muddled memories and came to terms with his Klingon DNA, but only speaks about it with a select few individuals. He visits his family whenever he is in the sector and makes a point of celebrating holidays with them every year.
