Starfleet style hand-to-hand combat

Childhood:
Valin Aristotle Sterling was born to Maria Sterling and Jacob Stills. His mother was a Starfleet security/combat officer serving on the Vanguard operating just inside Klingon space. His father was a free-trader dealing in legal, albeit rare, wares. The two were ships passing in the proverbial night and while Stills was informed about his son, neither parent was interested in him having a place in the boy's life.

It wasn't until Maria was three months pregnant that she removed herself from active combat duty, to instead serve as a shipboard combat advisor for the troops. The Vanguard dealt mostly with defending against rag-tag bands of Klingons out to make a name for themselves and reclaim their warrior heritage, now that their forces were completely recovered from the Dominion War. After Valin was born, Maria Sterling resigned her Starfleet commission as a lieutenant commander and retired to Earth, constantly traveling from one place to the next with her son.

Valin's early life was an exciting one, filled with change and new experiences and ideas. Out of respect for the warriors that she'd fought, and perhaps as another potential bullet on an Academy application, they spoke Klingon regularly amongst each other and she taught him what she had learned about their culture. He would not realize until he entered the Academy how the games that his mother played with him were preparing him for duty as a Tactical officer. From "got your nose" to "the angle game," his mind was being groomed to eventually follow in his mother's footsteps.

He would not disappoint her.

Starfleet Academy:
Though strong in some areas, Valin's skill-set lacked in the sciences and he only barely passed the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. He would fight this weakness during his entire Academy career, constantly getting tutoring and attending after-hours study groups. Of all of the sciences, warp theory did click with him after a while and he took to it, leveraging it to help level out his deficiencies in the others.

With his upbringing, he did find it easy to adapt to the strict discipline of the Academy and found himself giving his science tutors pointers on how to get by themselves in that aspect. Living on the move as he had, he didn't have much exposure to teamwork - always being shown how to do a thing on his own - though this he took to well also. Though his mother had worked to teach him to be self-sufficient, which was a strength in the field, working as a team maximized efficiency in most things and he saw the truth of it in Academy lessons.

Lacking the very best science skills, but performing well to excellent in other areas, he graduated in the top half of his class. A mediocre start, at best.

Starfleet Career:
Much to his chagrin, Valin's first assignment was as a diplomatic attache to a low-level, Bolian diplomat named Viska Dran representing the Federation on Risa. It was the worst possible duty that the young Starfleet officer could have imagined for himself. Instead of continuing his life of tests and challenges, he found himself fetching food and drink orders and escorting Dran to and from the most insignificant of meetings. Though bored out of his mind, he kept a diligent watch over the man and his doings.

The first spark of excitement came when a trader, with whom Dran was negotiating, attacked the diplomat in the middle of an official discussion. Valin had noted the trader's subtle movements at the table and the way that he favored his left hand and how it didn't rest naturally on the tabletop. He'd concealed a short knife there and would have plunged it straight into Dran's heart if not for Valin's quick intervention. As it turned out, Dran had been siphoning funds from the trader's accounts and had bankrupted him. Though normally Valin may have been given a commendation for his quick action, in order to cover up this embarassment to the Federation the incident was classified and not mentioned in any official logs. As a reward, though, Valin was given his choice of his next duty station.

He chose the 12th Fleet.
