Of Blood and Iron, Sweat and Steel; Part One - Child's Odyssey.

A time ago before James was serving the Federation, before he was a Hoplite, and LONG before he was a Soldier fighting for every inch of soil he called home... He was a child with only his mother, younger brother and sister just trying to survive within a hell known as war. Fighting not a enemy that they understand, but one that they must adapt to as they adapt to their opponents; The Borg.

The planets name was Omega IIV, now known as Hope. Its been three years since the Borg invaded the planet and James' family is cowering in a ruin of what was once a proud city, a safe-haven before any of this began was now a death trap for all that chose to remain within the boundaries.

His mother held all of her children close, covering their mouths, trying her best to stabilize and quiet her breathing as the hulking figures of two Combat Drones marched past the boarded up window, the setting sun casting their shadows onto the buildings cluttered, dusty floor. Their clothes were tattered, stained and soaked with sweat. The Drones were about to pass the window without noticing them but then a young Madison sneezed, the Drone on the right recognized the sound as life and said the all to familiar... yet terrifying phrase at the same time.

"We are the Borg. Lower your weapons and surrender yourselves. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

"Kids run! Out the back and don't stop until you are safe... go!" Their mother screamed as she pushed them out the door and ran the other way, leading the two Drones after her. The children cried no as their mother ran with the two monsters. James was only 13, his brother Justin was only 11, and Madison was only 7.

"Mommy nooo! Don't leave us and fight the monsters like Dad!" James screamed as he watched the figures disappear into the distance of the once lively city.

"Big brother... where is mommy going?" Young Madison asked, tugging on the torn sleeve on James' right side.

"Mommy... Mommy... Mommy is protecting us like Dad Maddie..." He replied, clutching his fists as his head hung low.

"Are they ever coming back for us big brother?" Both Justin and Maddie asked, looking up at their brother with fear and sadness in their blue eyes. Their faces were stained with dirt and sadly... blood. It wasn't any of theirs, but of people they once knew, cared for, and never knew would one day leave this world forever until they were older.

"I... Come on guys, follow me... Mom told us not to stop until we reached somewhere safe, and I intend to protect you both just like our parents are..." James lied, not wanting to tell them the truth... They walked for hours, avoiding Drones, not even bothering to check what little dead there was if it was their parents. As night began to finally fall, casting the dark blanket across the sky. It was quiet, not a single creature made a sound expect the occasional scream of terror... another unfortunate victim for the Borg.

James stayed awake as his siblings were curled up in a makeshift bed, sharing the only blankets they had to keep them warm. With no one else to look out for them James understood it was his turn to step up and look out for them, even if it were to cost him his life his brother and sister were not going to be harmed. It was too dark to see past three feet in front of you, luckily the Borg's implants glowed slightly in their night sky. That's what he was looking for, as he took a bite of food squinting his eyes as he scanned the environment. They didn't have any weapons being children, their only protection was to run as fast and as far as they could, praying that the strange laser weapons the Borg carried didn't hit them at all. He sighed as he finished the small amount of food he allowed himself, he hadn't eaten in three days before that, nor water for almost four. They were thirsty and hungry, tired and scared. James reached into the pocket of his jacket, grabbing an old photo... His family... they were standing in front of their home before all this happened... Their Father holding Maddie on his shoulders, their mother leaning her head on his right shoulder, with James and his little brother one arm around the others shoulders as they held onto a new puppy they just got...

The morning sun was slowly rising, they walked past the once proud sky scrappers... now collapsed within or blocking the streets and crushing the smaller buildings with the rubble. The dust had long cleared out but the creatures didn't. They walked out of the city limits where they had lived so close to... walking down the familiar streets void except for what was once happy memories. James laid a hand on a familiar fence gate as they walked up to the door, and inside their home. The roof was all but gone, bits and pieces still there, the windows were shattered, the white paint now gone as blood stained some parts of it. The family car was crushed, the fire died out long ago, most of the furniture was smashed or taken, only enough food for three days was left, and only a few days of water. James couldn't believe they left all this behind, but he didn't care... he was tired, Maddie was tired, and Justin was tired... they all curled up on the couch and slept...

(In case anyone is curious this a story of how my toon James Blaster came to be who he is. This is only part one of it, each section will skip ahead a few days, weeks, months, or years even of the last section. Enjoy and let me know what ya thought!)

Part Two- Child's Odyssey;

Two weeks after finally returning to their home, the only safe spot the children knew of, James and Justin sat in front of a safe trying desperately to open it.

"Uuuuuuurrrrrgggghhhhh!" James grunted as he pulled on the rusted handle, the hinges slowly began to creak and the door opened in centimeters. The safe was their dad's... what it held was their only source of protection, a firearm. More so a pistol but a weapon was a weapon in these times. Three children, all alone, the Borg on a rampage "killing" all they saw, people who lost their minds or their morals, raiding, burning, and killing any they crossed. Some would even take the kids for more... disgusting matters.

Justin finally grabbed onto the handle as well, helping his older brother pull with all his might until finally the door flew open and both boys flew backwards landing on their rears. They stared into the empty safe with horror, their only hope... gone... They both forget their father brought the weapon with them as they went into town that day for a stroll in the park to celebrate Maddie's birthday. Madison walked into the empty garage with the biggest grin on her face.

"Grr... stupid safe..." James grumbled as he looked up and saw the smile on his sister's face, "Whats up Maddie?"

"Look what I found brother!" She said as she held up a tattered poster, on it was information that described a safe haven for all to run to. It wasn't there before the invasion, no these were put up after the invasion when all the Soldiers from every country were fighting desperate battles.

Justin gasped as he read the poster, "James do you know what this means?"

"Yea I do... a place where we can be safe... but problem is I don't know where it is... even if we did know where it is how would we get there? We're almost out of food and water..." He replied with hope in his voice, almost a squeaky kind of hope.

"Weren't there some of daddy's friends still camping out at the store?" Maddie asked happy to going on a trip.

"Yea... hey yea there was! Justin go grab the backpack and put what little food and water is left in there. Maddie go grab the blankets!" James squeaked as he jumped to his feet running for the maps. They all scrambled to pack everything they would need for the trip. Their dad wasn't a soldier, or a wealthy businessman, but he did own a little store that sold children's toys. He always loved to create things with his hands, wooden toys, plastic, metal... it didn't matter as long as it brought a smile to someones face he was happy.

The kids set off towards their father's shop in hopes of finding someone who was willing to protect them. Running down the street, suddenly stopping as they stared in horror. A squad of Drones was patrolling the street in front of them. They hid behind a fence as they heard the whir of a jet fly overhead.... The drones aimed their cannon arms towards it and fired, almost all the beams making contact with it at the same time. The plane was ripped in two as it crashed to the planet, the pilot didn't even have a chance to eject as it smashed into a home not far from them.

Madison had to cover her mouth to stifle a scream of terror, James looked away as Justin stared with wonder thinking it was a scene from a movie. James looked around and grabbed his siblings dragging them towards another side of the street, a side where the drones couldn't see them as they began to walk. They didn't make it far from their house when they heard someone shout, "Hold your fire, they're just children!"

Part Three- Child's Odyssey;

It had only been three hours since the children accidentally stumbled upon a Military check-point. There were more guns then soldiers... there was always more weapons then bodies... They sat in one of the buildings within the ambush position being checked over by a medic.

"No signs of trauma, no cuts, no scrapes... not even a sign of being assimilated. They're clear Sergeant, these kids are some of the luckiest ones alive at the moment." The Medic finally said as he stood away from all three of them, looking towards another well armored man.

"Good, if we can prevent anything in this gods-forsaken region its to protect the civvies. Give 'em some food and water Doc then get back to the wounded..." He said, almost apologetically. The Marines of the 13th Corps of Margin were working with whoever they could find. Half of the men and women at the checkpoint weren't even Military, they were ordinary people just fighting to survive.

James wasn't too happy about running into Soldiers, but then again it was better then nothing. The only reason he wasn't as excited as his siblings was the fact that the Military of every nation in the world let the Borg gain too strong a foot hold. But it wasn't their fault, he was just too young to realize this yet.

"Thank you!" Maddie said as she was handed a warm bowl of soup and a glass of water. Justin repeated the same phrase with just as much excitement as he was handed a similar meal. The Doc looked straight at James and chuckled, crouching to meet him eye to eye.

"Hey buddy, you're the oldest out of all three right?" He asked as he handed James his meal.

"Yea..."

"Well they're lucky to have a big brother like you looking out for 'em. Takes a strong person to survive here, no matter their age..." He laughed as he pulled out three pieces of candy, handing them to the young boy, "Make sure to give these to your siblings for me, say you found them if you have too." As he finished speaking he stood up and walked towards a groaning man. His foot had almost been torn off in one of the fights, the Medic reached up and closed the curtain separating the view of the man and the children.

James just smiled as he looked at the candy and then his brother and sister, he walked up to them and handed both of them all three pieces, "Here guys, the nice man told me to give them to you." They smiled and took the pieces from his hands, saving them for after their hot meal. Both of his siblings were safe and happy... Perhaps living here wouldn't be so bad after all... as long as the Soldiers can protect them from the Borg was all he could think as he ate his meal slowly...

Part 4 - Child's Odyssey- Continuing Part 3.

James awoke in a cold sweat as a scream sounded through the air, "Borg!! Borg!!" He couldn't remember what was going on or where he was, everything seemed like a dream...

"We need those MG's up now! Doc get the children to the safe house, move! Second Squad on the roof of the toy store..." Someone was yelling outside the room where the children were sleeping, there was five kids in all. James, Justin, Maddie, and two others who they hadn't met yet.

A familiar figure appeared in the doorway, rifle at the ready as a few more adults ran past him as if they were running for their lives.

"Kids, wake up!" He sounded panicked, he crouched and began to awake the other four sleeping kids. He looked at James, his eyes were tear filled, "Come on buddy, grab your backpack and follow me. I won't let them get to you I promise!" He held out a hand pleading the small boy to trust him. James laid his hand, smaller by comparison, in his palm.

The Medic had slung his rifle over his shoulder and was carrying the two sleeping Children, James tried his best to carry his little sister on his back as Justin wore the backpack. They were running past fortified building after building. Men and Women fully dressed in their uniforms and clothes wearing armor. Their weapons were at the ready as they heard that sentence that sent a chill down everyone's spine.

"We are the Borg. Lower your weapons and surrender yourselves. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile." Five Drone's said in unison.

"Don't look back!! What ever happens DO NOT LOOK BACK KIDS!" Doc yelled as they kept running. James' legs were on fire, his chest felt heavy, and he wanted to collapse but as long as he had his siblings to protect he would never quit.

A blood-curling scream sounded in the air as the cannons began to open fire. Gunshots began to sing an orchestra as the beam weapons belonging to the Borg began to fire. The ones with the nanite tube attached to their arm began to assimilate some of the soldiers. This was the scene before James as he dared a glance backwards and almost tripped, the grip holding his sister to his back almost lost at that moment.

Doc reached down and stabilized James quickly putting the two kids down, forming a shield between him and the kids, "Keep running down the street until you reach the market kids, go!!" He ran towards the Borg and fired his rifle, hitting the closet Borg in the shoulder. He didn't stand a chance as one Borg grabbed his arm and another shoved a assimilation tube in his neck. James looked away as tears ran down his face as they kept running. He was now in charge as they ran and ran until they finally reached the Market. The sounds of battle still fresh and ongoing. Nobody could believe, the nice man who had been looking after them since they got here had sacrificed himself to buy them another day of life...

Part 5: Teenage Dream

Three years after the assault that cost a lot of people their lives, or more so their individuality and freedom. James was now 16, Justin was now 14 and Maddie was now 10 getting ready to turn 11. After reaching the market safe house three years ago they found it destroyed and abandoned. They had two new friends from that moment on, Jacob and a little boy named Marks. Jacob was the same age as James, 16. His little brother Marks was 9 the youngest out of them all.

James and Jacob were standing on the roof of where their small group was calling home for now, drinking alcohol and scanning the area with their "relieved" rifles from a few corpses of dead survivors. Out of 56 countries so far only three were in a state as bad as this. 22 were still in a pre-invasion state while the rest were managing to control their Borg problems.

"Hahaha! Look at the Frigger run!" Jacob said as he took another sip from his frothy beer.

"HA! Here comes a drone, which one should we aim for? The Frigger or the Drone?" James asked as he lifted his rifle to his shoulder. It felt like he was getting ready to shoot at tin cans in the backyard with a pellet rifle.

"HEY Frigger! Hope your little gang can live with one less jerk!" Jacob yelled as he fired at the Frigger gang member, at the same time James fired at the Borg. The Borg went down instantly, the semi-lucky man stood up and began to limp off only to be dropped by two rounds hitting him in his sports armor.

"HAHAHA! Got him, that one's a tie." James said as he took a marker and put down a line in a section marked tie. They were having a little competition to see who could dispose of the most threats to their group. The biggest threat was obviously the Borg, but a second threat that they were know realizing was the gangs. The Friggers were the biggest, second to the Doom-sayers. They never messed with what was left of the Military or any Militia groups that guarded the make-shift settlements where people were trying to regain a piece of their lost lives. Groups like the ones James was in charge of; Survivor bands outside of any walled camp or military fort were fair game.

"Ahh its always fun to dispose of the trash. So who's going down stairs to see how the children are doing?" Jacob asked looking at James with a grin, they were both buzzed knowing the limit before getting drunk.

"I'll handle it this time, think you can manage any Drones or Friggers that come looking for their missing comrades?"

"HA! As if the Friggers would come looking for that piece of shi-"

"Language! I don't want Marks or Maddie picking up our habits." James growled, Jacob's eyes went wide and apologized quickly.

"Sorry, but as I was saying, as if they would come looking for him. He's just a scout, only useful while alive..." He spat over the edge in the direction of the corpse.

James just chuckled and walked down stairs whistling an old tune, a lullaby his mother always use to sing to rock them to sleep. He missed his parents terribly but he couldn't mourn their loss yet. Every waking hour he prayed they were safe in one of the camps or old world forts.

Maddie was sitting with Marks at a dusty table missing two of its four corners on the right side. They were coloring on some paper as Justin was standing over a cooking pot that laid on a fuel burning stove.

"Whats for dinner there mommy-dearest?" James joked as he looked at Justin, he just shrugged and pointed a thumb at some open Ready to Eat Meal packets.

"Take your pick bro, we got rie without rot'ra, rie without stra, and rie without f'it'a."

"In other words, the usual?"

"Pretty much... oh we found some paper and crayons so those two are just coloring right now." Justin sighed as he pointed at the two children left in the group.

"Thanks Justin, We got a Frigger and a Drone." James chuckled as he grabbed himself another drink.

"Yaaay Big Brother!" Maddie pipped up as she heard what he said. James blushed not realizing she was actually paying attention.

Jacob came down stairs closing the hatch that lead to the roof behind him, "Sun's setting we should be safe from raids for now."

"All right, I'll head back up there around high shadow to see if any glow-worms are rummaging through the area." James nodded and threw Jacob the drink in his hand.

Glow-worms was the common code word for Borg scout Drones, they were a new class all in their own. Taken from the assimilated Hoplites of the once abundant ranks of the International peace keepers. Fast, silent, and even more deadly then the Combat Drones or a Borg ship capable of entering the atmosphere.

Everyone was silent as Justin began to serve out the meal, the only sound was that of chewing and forks scrapping against metal cups. James looked at his friend and family. Justin had orange hair that came down to his shoulders standing at a height of 5,10, Maddie had blondish-brown hair just like him standing at 4,3, Jacob had a Military Crew cut and stood at the same height as James at 5,5. Marks had short black hair at 3,2.

Everyone's heart stood still as they heard a noise. James and Jacob quietly got up, rushing for their rifles. James held up a finger to his mouth silently saying "Shhhhhh." While Jacob was waving his hand in a motion telling them to get down.

James leaned close to Jacob, "Check the rear window, I'll head upstairs and see what made the noise." Jacob nodded his head and silently shuffled his way to the window in the rear room where they all slept. James took a quick look at Justin and saw him pull back the hammer on his pistol. They were preparing for the worst in order to protect the young ones. James looked at the long staircase that led to the roof of the one story building. Quietly side stepping up the stairs until he reached the door, his heart was racing, his breathing was quick and shallow. He was afraid and this time for himself. Reaching a hand out he opened the hatch that led to the outside world, jumping outside.

There was nothing in sight for miles on end, perhaps it was just an animal? Or worse... the Friggers looking for their lost scout. He wasn't afraid of the Borg at this moment as long as nobody fired a shot or made a sound. After an hour of scanning the area James walked back down stairs and saw that the others had just finished eating while Jacob kept his rifle aimed at the heavily fortified entrance. What was left of his meal untouched.

"See anything?" He asked without moving his eyes.

"Nothing... no Glow-worms, no Friggers, not even a patrol... maybe it was just the wind we heard?"

"I hope James, I honestly hope to the gods your right..."

Part 6: Teenage Dream part 2

Three days after their near heart attack James, Jacob, and Justin all stood on the roof... They were looking at a map of the surrounding area, x and o's marked the spots where they had been and where they needed to go.

"We need to head to another store, grab some medicine and bandages..." Justin said that as he pointed to one of the circled spots on the map.

"Medicine and bandages yes, but we also need to restock on our water supplies and grab some more R.E.M. meals." Jacob muttered as he looked up at the sun, covering his forehead with his hand so he could see.

"I say yes to it all, Jacob you'll head to the Pharmacy and I'll head to the market to see what I can scrounge up... later we can head out to hunt Justin so you can feed us properly." They all laughed and stood as a burst of wind rushed over the roof of the building. Walking back down James and Jacob began to unbarricade the door. They moved the desks, chairs, and book cases that blocked the door.

"We'll be back by sundown, if we're not back by then you know what happened." Jacob said to Justin as they both walked out the door. James and Jacob parted ways at the street, Jacob went left, James went right.

It was high noon when they had left their stronghold it was now almost sunset when James had arrived at the market, he had crept through building and street alike wary of any body he didn't want to run into. Scrambling through the market he grabbed what non-perishable foods he could find, after climbing through one of the many no longer in existence windows.

"Take the rice... grab the water cases... oooh Military rations..." He was fitting as much stuff as he could into his back pack to bolster their supplies, water was a priority as the group still had plenty of food. Then something caught James' eye... a man... dressed in a weird uniform, his shirt was red with a triangle like badge pinned to his right side. He had multiple wounds and was obviously dead... Where did he come from? What was he... who was he? James crouched by the man and began to scavenge, he spied a handle in a holster and reached for it...

He had picked up what was known as a Phaser. James moved the weapon in his hand, "What in the world is this?" He aimed the weapon at a can and pulled the trigger. A orange beam shot out from the focus end literally disintegrating the small can...

"Oh-ho-ho! Awesome!!" Was all he could say... he quickly grabbed his back pack and ran back home with at least three days extra of food, and six days worth of water... He busted through the door at high shadow, "Guys you're never gonna believe what I found!"

Everyone's reaction was the same, "What?" James pulled the phaser out of his pocket and laid it on the table... everyone gawked at it the same way James had when he found it on a unfortunate soul...

"What is this thing?" Jacob said as he cradled it in his hand, James grabbed it and aimed out the window, firing it off. They had forgotten their number one rule, NO sound at night! Everyone was so excited to see this new "toy" that they had completely forgotten their rules. Who could blame them really? It was after all quite interesting to see a orange beam instead of a green one.

Part 7: Teenage Dream part 3

"What do you think it is?" Justin asked as they all stared at the weapon after James' demonstration which left a nice hole in the wooden barricade on the window.

"What ever it is, its the same as the weapons the Glow-Worms use" James and Jacob replied in unison.

"So what do you think we should do with it?" Justin asked leaning against the now burnt window.

"What ever the hell it is we're going to be using it!" James said greedily, he was starting to change... He never had much of a love for violence before but as the years went on he began to love it for the simple fact that it protected his family.

Everyone walked off to go do their things leaving James alone to cradle the weapon, Jacob went to store the food, water, and medicine they had gathered earlier. Justin went to get James a plate for dinner, as Maddie and Marks went to sleep in the bed room. No body really wanted to bug James when he got a brand new toy like this. He was sitting there, studying it, pretty soon he would get his tools and take it apart and see what made it work. He always remembered how he put it together, always remembered how it was before he took it apart, and after a few times tinkering with it he learnt how to improve a weapon's capabilities.

He opened the casing up, examined the power supply, the array's, the trigger system, the circuits... Once he learnt how everything worked he began to test the systems, see those he could improve, get rid of, and change...

It was the next morning when Jacob walked back into the main room and saw James passed out on the table, drooling slightly, with the Phaser put back together with a few pieces from the weapon scattered across the table. He extended a hand and shook the man awake.

"Hey James... James wake up man... we have company. Some Militia from the local town want to talk to our leader."

"Zzzz... Uh!? What do they want man?"

"They want to talk with you, should I let them in?"

"Confiscate their weapons and let them in!" James mumbled as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

Four men walked in dressed in heavy combat armor, with a few scraps here and there for extra protection. The man wearing a Colonels Star stepped forward and extended his hand, "Colonel Night-Bird... a pleasure to meet a group that's been keeping the Friggers on their toes."

James shook the mans hand and gestured for all four of them to take a seat, "James Blaster, nice to meet you as well Colonel but I know you're not here to see us about our gang hunting."

"No I'm not, Sergeant if you will." The Colonel nodded his head at the other Senior looking man, he had a scar clear across his neck where a knife had probably slit it.

"You're right, We're actually here about this weapon you've found. Everyone within a thirty mile radius saw the weapon's light during High-Shadow. It seems we're the first to arrive to offer a deal."

"I'm listening..." James nodded his head for Jacob to go do what he wanted to do, not like he needed his permission in the first place.

"We wish to extend you and your group, protection, and a more secure place to sleep... In exchange for your help in studying this weapon and finding a way to create more."

"Hmmm... Tempting... Jacob!" James yelled across the room.

"Yea James?"

"Go and tell the others want these fine gentlemen are offering us, see what they say and then tell me!" James asked.

Jacob nodded his head and walked into the only bedroom... After an hour's wait he walked back out and gave a silent answer that they agreed to the terms.

"Alright then Colonel, we'll go with you... but on one condition..."

"And that would be Mr.Blaster?"

"Don't let the Borg get to my family."

"Deal." The two men shook hands and shortly James' group was packed and ready to go, it would take a day to get back to the city the Colonel and his men were from but it would be well worth it to have some more interaction with other living beings.
