Notes: Subject is the principle heir to valuable affiliate member of Federation.
It is said that the blood runs hot in the Cortez family. Rumor says that stems from a deal with a devil far in the family’s past. What the supposed price was is unclear. What is clear is that the deal must have been worth it, as the Cortez family is the crowned family of the Archduchy of Hradsburg. The three world archduchy is located near the Imaga system, Risa Sector, Sirius Sector Block, Beta Quadrant.
The archduchy has a long standing affiliation with the Federation dating from 2265, having traditionally sent the first born sons to Star Fleet Academy for training. As the first son of the leading branch of the family, subject entered Star Fleet in 2383 and official tracking begins.
His noble upbringing bought him no favors in the academy though it helped him excel at diplomatic situations. His aggression in simulations earned him the infamy of one of the worst Kobayashi Maru on record when he rammed his ship into the Kobayashi Maru to keep it out of enemy hands. Escalating misconduct almost got the subject kicked out of the academy, though he managed to graduate in 2387 near the bottom of his class with a GPA of 2.1.
After graduating, the subject promptly resigned his commission, and returned to his home world of Crete to help put suppress a coup attempt and avenge the assassination of his father, the ruling Archduke at the time. Official tracking of subject ends.
Addendum, 2389: Civil war in Archduchy ends. Former subject named new Archduke. Former subject makes first and only official state visit to Federation soon after to normalize relations once again.
Addendum, 2399: Military spending dramatically increases in the archduchy. Several old galaxy class ships are purchased from the Federation as well as a brand new Maelstrom class vessel.
Addendum, 2404: Maria Isabella Cortez, daughter of Count Sancho Cortez and heir to the archduchy, attends Star Fleet Academy.
Addendum, 2408: Maria Isabella Cortez graduates from the Academy. Most of ruling family attends graduation ceremony, including former subject.
Addendum, 2409: Maria Isabella Cortez is declared lost to the Borg. Hradsburg ships are seen actively hunting Borg. Formal observation begins again subject declares intent to learn from the Federation the best methods of attacking and liberating Borg. Granted honorary title of Vice Admiral and if officially listed as an observer.
"Can I freshen your drink for you?"
Vale looked up from the PADD in his hand to give a hard stare at the girl who had spoken to him. It took him a moment to reply, but that moment of silence was enough to make the girl shift uncomfortably under his gaze.
"No." Vale replied tersely. "Thank you." He added as an afterthought when the girl left his table to tend to other customers.
He wished he had brought his body guards with him to keep people from speaking to him, but that would have garnered more negative attention. For a culture that claimed to be open minded and understanding of other cultures, quite a stink had been raised the last time he had come to Star Fleet Academy with his body guards. Having two Orions, with slave collars and chains going to his left wrist, had caused such an uproar that Vale had had to leave Lishno and Nerne on the ship from then on.
He knew, intellectually, that in the Federation anyone could talk to him like they were equal to him. And they could initiate a conversation with him. However two decades being the Archduke had gotten him used to certain social etiquette towards him. Even after spending a year in the Federation again, he still wasn't used to the casual nature in which people addressed him.
Vale turned his attention to the PADD in his hand. The PADD had his Starfleet intelligence file on it. He wasn't surprised to find so little on himself. Being a small three world affiliate of the Federation didn't make him important outside the archduchy. And if he was honest to himself, the reason there was a file on him at all was probably to just make sure he didn't drop dead while at the Academy.
What was unusual about the report was the mention of Isabella. Why she would be reported on in the same file as him was curious. However, the file was correct about his reasons for leaving Crete. Isabella was the sole heir, and the archduchy was going to do whatever it took to bring her home.
