Vladimir stood attentively in a large, but empty, lecture theatre talking to Professor Mustafar Al-Abanri about Xenolinguistics. As one of his majors, Vladimir (or as his friends called him, Vlad) took an interest in Xenolinguistics, especially indigenous languages that existed on the periphery of space. To Vladimir, studying Xenolinguistics was like putting together pieces of a puzzle so as to further the exploration of space. Vladimir also hoped that perhaps his interest in Xenolinguistics would find uses in his future Engineering Career, perhaps finding an ancient technology that could be useful for Starfleet's current vessels. That would certainly give a jumpstart to his career.
Today he got into the lecture theatre where Mustafar was teaching just before he got back to his office. Mustafar was a jovial, learned Professor who enjoyed discussing Xenolinguistics with his students. He enjoyed this because Mustafar valued students who took an interest in Xenolinguistics, rather than just aiming to pass the course. A conversation continued, echoing through the relatively empty lecture theatre. While it could be heard outside the lecture theatre, the details could not be known unless someone was within the building.
"So the alphabetical characters of some of these indigenous Deferi tribes", Mustafar pointed at a map on his datapad, "is exactly the kind of interesting xenolinguistical challenge that we were discussing earlier in class. The inability of thousands of experts to translate the texts of this tribe is extremely interesting, because the characters used are unique within the region. In your ten thousand, five hundred word paper you must identify different methods to create a theoretical regime in understanding and translating these indigenous texts".
Vladimir, fascinated at what Mustafar was saying, pointed at a certain part of the map just east of the tribe Mustafar was pointing at. "Is it possible sir, that the linguistic spread occurred through the know migration route of the Deferi from the east?". Mustafar immediately said, giving Vladimir an intense glare, "that's the textbook theory Vladimir, however the evidence shows a unique set of characters that do not match up with other tribes located further east. It is so unique, that another factor must be in play!".
The conversation was constructive, and quite educational. After an hour or so of discussion, Vladimir thanked the professor and stepped outside with a tonne of notes for his assessment. 'That casual discussion of Deferi xenolinguistics, and especially the scripts from the indigenous tribe has helped alot. I at last have some direction for this paper!'', Vladimir thought to himself grinning, with a skip to his walk towards his dormitory.
