So as the title stands, i need a new one, im sick of screaming at my laptop for people to hear me and my roommates are starting to get pissed at me. so i need to find one.

What i want is for one to be Under $50 and last me about a year with non aggressive use. Also i need to knwo what the pros and cons of having a USB vs a non USB connection, ive never bought one before, i usually buy head phones for music and none of them have mics.

So have at it, discuss!

I use a set of headphones that are lacking an earbud (like theres just a wire. nothing else for that side), along with my built in mic.

Works wonders.

Logitech makes some capable gaming headsets for around 30$. I used to use them before I got the Razer set that I have now. I guess the real question is what you really want. Do you want the full ear cup, or are ear buds fine? If you live in a noisy house, the full cup would help block out other sounds, so that is a plus. My recollection of the Logitech microphone is that it tended to pick up some of the background noise, but it wasn't bad. What I have now is better but not perfect.

I like the over the ear design, its what im most comfortable with...i came across these, but im unsure if they would be worth the money and effort to get them.

I know we talked about this on TS but I use a Plantronics Gamecom. I bought it after my Razor Carcaradon (I think thats what kind it was) broke after 6 months. When I bought my new computer I had to buy a USB adapter for the plantronic, but I think thats more an issue with hte computer not the headset. I've never been dissapointed with anything I've owned by logitech.

I use the Plantronics Gamecom 780. I didn't need a high end headset as i have surround sound so this headset was perfect. It's comfortable, great sound and the mic is awesome. It's only a stereo headset but it comes with drivers to mimic up to 7.1 surround sound. I can definitely tell where something is coming from through this headset in Battlefield. It has a lot of adjustment for size and the cable is pretty good quality.
The only thing is, this is USB. Pro's of this connection is that it's purely digital sound, no interference and a very clear sound. Con's, well you can't boost the sound output of the headset with better sound cards or software and such. Tbh it sounds perfectly ok to me anyway, people say it lacks bass but if you're like me and don't want explosions to blow your head off then it's spot on.
Ok it's not quite the quality of some of the Sennheiser or higher end Razer headset's but it's a good headset nonetheless.

Thing is if you want awesome sound as well as a headset with a good mic then you'll want to go with one that has phono connectors and not USB. USB will be a lot clearer but you can't "tune" the sound.

Something like the Turtle Beach headset above has it's own amplifier built in and is powered by USB but it has 2 phono connectors that will connect to your motherboard's onboard or sound card. You can use the controls on the actual headset to tune the bass and treble and you can also turn your mic up and down and switch it off from the same controls. They're probably the most complete package and are perfect for gaming as well as listening to music and movies but they will lack that sound clarity you get with a digital USB source. There's also a lot of wires with that headset. The USB cable, speaker and mic phono's and Xbox user's have an extra chat cable.

My old Turtle Beach PX21 headset sounded awesome but i didn't like having ten thousand wires laying around and also the ear cups made me sneeze a lot and my eye's itch.
