Gold was born into a Starfleet family, his father being a starship Captain and his mother a Doctor. His parents were regularly assigned deep space assignments and unable to have him onboard with them, so at 2 years old he was sent to live with his Aunt Kathy. His mother, Doctor Marka, tried to stay in touch as much as she could, though the deep space assignments often kept his mother and father away from him for periods of 9 months or longer. His father, Captain Darren Gold, seemed more concerned with his own career and took little interest in his son, repeatedly ignoring subspace communiqués. His mother tried her best, and deeply loved her son, contacting him whenever she could. This led to a deep resentment from Gold towards his parents, mainly his father, something his mother frequently admonished him for.
His aunt Kathy had done her best to raise him, had tried to teach him manners and the difference between right and wrong. She had repeatedly discussed respect and loyalty with him, stressing how vital and important these traits were. She often felt a failure as Gold hadn’t seemed to take any of this onboard, the truth was that she had taught him well, he had learned everything she had taught him; the simple fact was that he usually chose to ignore it and let his conscience deal with the repercussions. He deeply cared for his aunt Kathy, he just cared for himself more. He believed in the notion of loyalty and respect, but he didn't hand it out freely, it had to be earned. Later in life, Gold would prove that he knew exactly what loyalty was, that she had indeed done a good job in raising him, unfortunately it appears that he may have given his loyalty to the wrong people.
Lacking a father figure a 16 year old Gold, thinking he knew best, fell into a bad crowd. For the next 2 years nothing but trouble ensued, he got in bar fights, got involved with petty crime, revolted towards any kind of authority and then, one day, went too far. He had infiltrated Starfleet Command late one night after having been out with his friends. Even in his inebriated state, he hadn’t found it difficult to get past there security protocols and make his way around the facility. He occasionally had to dart inside a room to avoid passers by, but it had seemed far too easy to Gold. He had entered the main shuttlebay, made his way inside a runabout and was going through his pre-flight checks when the shuttle had been surrounded by Starfleet Security. They must have been tipped off, he had been so careful to avoid detection! He didn’t have many choices, and decided to simply hand himself over to them. He and his friends had thought it would be a laugh, Starfleet did not agree…
Thanks to his estranged father, he somehow escaped punishment for this and was let off with a stern warning, with the caveat that if he attempted anything like that again Starfleet would ensure that he was prosecuted. He also received a message from his father, stating that he had helped him this time by calling in some favours he was due, but that he wouldn't help his son if it happened again. Gold didn’t really care, nor heed the warning, and soon fell back into his old habits. The people that he socialised with didn't truly care about him, they looked after number one first and foremost, if someone were to get caught in the cross fire then so be it. Drinking, gambling, fighting & generally running amok, these were constants in his life and he was thoroughly enjoying every moment of it. He was relatively happy at this stage of his life, though that would soon change...
Dragging himself home in the early hours one Sunday morning the only thing that Gold had ever feared happened, and his worst nightmare had suddenly became a reality.
He awoke to the communiqué he dreaded the most, his mother had been killed during an encounter with an unknown species at Serra IX. For 4 whole months, he hid his grief and anger and continued with his wild ways, even missing his mother’s funeral. He ignored his father’s attempts to communicate, blaming him for how his life had turned out and, more importantly, for the death of his mother. Why had he allowed her to go on the away team, while he stayed on the bridge? Why was it his mother that had been killed and not that coward? Surely it was a Captains duty to lead his crew in to combat, not to sit on some chair on a bridge and watch from afar. His mother had been the brave one, carrying out her assignment as ordered, while others such as his father hid behind protocol and procedure in order to keep themselves safe. This was something that Stuart could never forgive.
Eventually, after being arrested once again during a drunken bar fight with some locals, Starfleet offered Gold a chance, a chance to join Starfleet and make something of himself. He was promised to be treated fairly, to have the slate and his record wiped clean. He wasn’t particularly interested in being a member of Starfleet, he didn’t care about any of that, but he saw it as a chance to avenge his mother’s murder, a chance to get even, so he accepted. On that day, when he walked through the Academy doors for the first time, he swore he would avenge his mother’s death, no matter what it took and no matter the cost to him or to anyone else. They would pay dearly for murdering his mother, and for all the others they had butchered. His only goal in life would be revenge, and anyone who got in the way would suffer a similar fate to them.
Before he joined his fellow Cadet’s, Gold was staggering home in the early hours of the morning and was approached in the street by a hooded figure, a person who would change his life forever…
On stardate 71707.5 (07th August 2396) Gold joined his fellow Cadets, though he was never truly one of them. He kept himself to himself, grabbing every single bit of knowledge he could and using it as he saw fit. He became known as a bit of a loner, though those who happened to mention this in earshot of him were given, at best, a verbal tongue lashing, earning him the nickname of Snakebite. He continued to run around with his old “acquaintances”, continued to gamble, drink and fight. He frequently got himself into trouble with Starfleet Security but, despite their previous warnings about insisting that he would be prosecuted if they ever caught him again, he escaped unpunished. Perhaps he had been given a clean slate after all, or perhaps it was because of his test results, the fact that he was always near the top of his class, or was it something else? Was someone protecting the young Cadet from punishment…
He showed an uncanny aptitude for Intelligence gathering, Exobiology and Warfare Tactics, often teaching others as much as he was learning. His tutors had always stated that they felt he was far more advanced than he should have been, and they had no explanation as to why. He didn't appear to push himself in class and, considering his social life, it's fair to assume that he didn't spend all of his free time studying. Yet, he excelled in so many areas that it simply didn't make sense. The Academy staff had monitored him during classes and exams, and he wasn't cheating. Or, if he was, they weren't able to detect how. Speaking to Gold, it was clear that he was highly intelligent, but there was no feeling in his eyes, no emotion seemed to be there. Just how he knew so much remains a mystery, one that only Admiral Yamasoto and Gold himself know.
It is fair to say that Gold was not popular at Starfleet Academy, however he possessed many of the skills of a fine Starfleet officer, and many that contradicted this theory. If only they could have curbed his stubborn streak, toned down his arrogance, he would have had all of the makings of a first rate Starfleet Officer. As it was, he more resembled a coiled viper waiting to strike. With the training he had received in unarmed combat, and the skill and talent he showed with a Klingon Qutluch, known as "the ceremonial blade of an assassin", he was a formidable foe indeed. For many of these reasons, he did not have many friends during his time at the Academy, though he did have a brief romance with a female from London, finishing it abruptly and for no apparent reason. It had been somewhat of a whirlwind romance, one that left her devastated. To this day, it is something that Gold does not openly speak of.
And so it was that he graduated. Were it not for his insubordination and frequent clashes with authority, he may well have graduated at the top of his class. Although he will never admit it, he wanted his father to be present at his graduation. Despite having not spoken to him in 3 years, Gold was still secretly disappointed that his father was not in attendance at his graduation. He deeply missed his mother, a fact that others often tried to exploit. They mistook him missing his mother as a weakness, when in reality his desire for vengeance against her killers was what fuelled his drive to succeed. Whilst he perhaps didn’t even know it himself, he longed for his father’s approval, wanted to know him again, to be close to him. He missed his father, something that wasn't easy for him to admit, nor to stomach. He still resented his father, but maybe they could put things right together. More than anything else, he secretly wanted to make his father proud.
On stardate 76406.23 (19th September 2401) Captain M’Nkara gave Gold an opportunity and he was assigned to the USS Caledonia, a Science Vessel assigned to explore the Paulson Nebula. Captains hadn't exactly been queuing up to have the young Ensign assigned to their ship, such was his disciplinary file from the Academy, but M'Nkara saw something in him, she wasn't sure what it was but she had decided to take a risk. Ensign Gold was part of the new Security detail assigned to the ship, most days passed without incident and he ran drill after drill with the other members of the team to ensure they were combat ready. They practiced hand to hand combat, sniper training, small firearms and crowd control to name but a few. The ship had very little use for a Security detail, however whenever they were needed they carried out their duties and ensured that the Caledonia completed her mission and returned to ESD in one piece.
On stardate 77032.23 (26th May 2402) Gold was placed on sabbatical for a 12 month period, although we have reason to believe that he was still on active duty. The files for this period of his career are classified, however it is strongly believed that he was placed undercover during this time. An unconfirmed sighting of him on Vulcan during this period adds further weight to this theory. When his sabbatical ended, later than initially expected, on stardate 78065.5 (11th July 2403) the then Lieutenant was assigned to the USS Pegasus, a Fleet Escort on the front line of the war with the Klingon Empire. Serving under Captain H'Tor, Gold was the head of a specialist unit designed to infiltrate Klingon space and stay undetected. All case files on this unit, and its missions, are classified.
He has proven himself time and time again in combat, yet his past comes back to haunt him. He has risen through the ranks to Lt Cmdr, however many feel if it were not for his continual challenging of senior officers, his disregard for protocol and blatant disdain for the chain of command, he may have had his own command by now. Rumours also persist that he is a member of some “Boogey man” organisation and underground movement. This can not be confirmed, however we recommend further investigation & observation. Gold is one to watch, for now we are unsure if this is a positive or negative assignment.
