Hi,

Before I go applying, is it ok if I ask a few questions? :face:

I'm a bit a a newbie having only been playing a day or so. Playing Tactical and will no doubt focus on Escorts. I've started reading up a little about the game as it's slightly more complex than it appears when you first start up (or perhaps that's my habbit of reading too much into things). I've ignored the few in game fleet invites that have popped up so far - I'd rather pick one and ask questions first lol.

1) Gameplay question. Looking at the weapon types / general tactics, if you don't want to be pinned to one spot, I guess it makes sense to go for high weapon damage / coverage, rather than focussing fire in one spot? For overlaps, Beam arrays look like they give the best damage from broadsiding. I'm curious about cannons though. IF you equipped cannons in the front and rear (looks like lower damage than phasers from broadsides), do cannons immediately fire once targets are lined up then have a cooldown? I mean if you tried to broadside with cannons and "wiggled" left and right, would both front and rear sets fire alternately and drive your dps to more or less double? Weird question but I can't see an answer anywhere and if I'm going damage I'd like to milk any oversights before I get blown up.

2) Your divisions. I'm fairly flexible about gameplay. I like to do damage (no shock) and so far prefer the space combat to the ground combat, despite being a noob and being blown up by a Borg mothership twice already  . That in mind, which divisions would that fit with?

Additional info just in case from your form :face: :
Arcturio (I think - I'll check the spelling when I'm not killing a quiet patch at work lol)
@simon155x

Age - Dinosaur. 38
EU res (UK)
Time: GMT

Googled Star Trek Online Fleets and you popped up.
Not sure about reasons for joining having not spoken to you yet

Divisions - as below - not sure and open to advice lol:
Like any form of PVE - group or solo, but groups more fun with most games when you can get it.
Ground not so good, unless I'm doing it wrong. (Please tell me!)Bugs me when NPC get in line of fire, making targetting harder, and feels a little clunky to me, not so fluid with aim, crouch etc.
Role playing - not really my thing but wouldn't be a first ;)
PVP - admittedly haven't tried it. Most likely would wind up taking a different approach. I guess from the lack of obvious NPC shield redistributions, a PVE player would have more luck with scientific, heavy shield damage and torpedoes?

Federation. Alien race.

Diplomacy? Uhm. Yeah. Sure. What is it? :face:

Usually online around 19:00 GMT - 22:00 GMT weekdays, and more random weekends. I like to get out when I can but if I'm stuck in or on call, probably longer lol.

Played lots of MMOs. Yes I'm ashamed to admit WoW was one of them for many years. Many others soon forgotten :) In terms of multiplayer games I just tend to boot up things like Robocraft once in a while for giggles.

Benefit? As a complete nub, the biggest benefit at the moment would probably be making you all look better by comparison lol. Does that count as a paragraph?

Re: Activity policy, I have to clarify. I'm likely to log into the game most days and play for a while. Forums tend to vary and depend how busy it is at work lol. After all, I'm unlikely to be on a forum when I could be in game playing  If it's busy at work, there may be several days between forum trips. If that in line with what you expect?

Welcome Arcturio,

Thank you for visiting and expressing your interest.
I'll try and answer some of your questions.

Gameplay: You are correct in that beam weapons seem to give greater damage output when using a broadside approach. However cannons will generally give greater damage output when used correctly. Cannons are powerful but have a limited forward facing firing arc, so there is an entirely different way to use them. Personally I prefer a cruiser with beams and a single torpedo fore and aft. I do on occasion break out the more manoeuvrable escort fitted with cannons and turrets when I want max damage output and don't need the survivability of the tougher cruiser. That's just my preference though, there are people here that can give you far more comprehensive advice on tactics and weapons. Honestly, I never really got into fine tuning my builds, I use mostly canon(ish) builds that suit me and work for PVE. Not very useful, but at the end of the day, it what works for you that matters in my opinion.

Divisions: Our divisions offer a wide range of focuses. I'm sure we've all been blown up by the odd borg ship now and again so I wouldn't worry about that. I am less familiar with our other division as I am with Engineering, so perhaps someone can give you an opinion on how they get on in their own divisions. In Engineering we cater for the casual player. This mostly means two things.
First, we tend to be laid back in our approach and don't actively expect our members to seek out groups all the time or have any in game specialities. We do encourage participation in groups but we quite understand if that isn't your thing or if you're just not in the mood and want to play alone.
Second, with our focus being on general PVE content and our casual approach, we often serve as a first division for new member that are not as yet sure if they have any focus. After a time, some members decide they wish to transfer to another division and start to specialise more or simply because they want to join with friends in another division. We are absolutely fine with this. Our aim is to encourage our members to feel at home whatever division they wish to be in.
You should never feel that you must stay in a particular division or cannot look outside of your division for team mates or other assistance.

Activity policy: While divisional policy may vary, the global rule is that members must log into the main in game fleet and the forums at least once every 30 days. Simply put, as long as you log into your main character and the forums at least once a month, you should be fine. Though we do advise checking the forums regularly so that you're aware of what is going on in the fleet. If you expect to be absent from either the forums or the game for longer, then your division VA should be informed so they might be able to make arrangements for a Leave of Absence or otherwise advise you.

I hope I've managed to answer some of your questions. I'm sure someone will be able to cover what I've missed. :bolian:

Hi Arcturio,

I'm a relative newbie compared to a lot of the members of the fleet, but I thought I'd chip in my 2p :) I should mention that there isn't really a division between divisions (see what I did there?) and we all mix pretty freely. In fact, it's often encouraged, especially when you know that some of the guys from another division are particularly skilled in an area you're weak in. Cooperation and helping the rest of the fleet is a highly encouraged, and not limited to your own division. We occasionally go head to head in competition but that's mostly for the fun/challenge, not for any real rivalry. Although obviously section 31 is the best at everything :D

I'm not a damage expert (or an anything expert really) so I'll avoid those questions, but I can say that diplomacy as we in the fleet know it is a group of members who help reach out to other fleets for various reasons. Sometimes it's for admin purposes (e.g. if there's a question about an applicant's past fleet activities) but mostly it's to do things like have mixers, get together for cooperative events or PvP and generally help maintain our good reputation in STO :)

I'd highly recommend applying if you like the sound of the fleet; I was very new when I started, I've only been a member of the 12th, and I'm very happy here.

Hi Arcturio,
Glad to see you consider our fleet and welcome to our forum space.

1. Cannons vs Beams, all depends on your style of playing. I for one love faster escorts which are maneuverable, so I fly with a lot of cannons and hardly any torpedoes! Of course point and fire is the best approach in escorts, some also do the attack pattern that traces an 8 with the center being the target (though this has it's disadvantages in missions like Khitomer Space STF). But the cliched stereotype is that Engineering Captains go in a Engineering Ability - beam based cruisers and Tactical Captains go in Cannon - Tactical based escorts. This needn't be stuck to either.

Also the best dps cannons - Dual Heavy Cannons cannot be mounted aft, so people use beam arrays or torpedoes or Turrets aft. Everybody blows up at some point!

2. Most divisions are there only for book keeping, everyone mingles with everyone else! More info: viewtopic.php?f=188&t=12516 Most new comers seem to join Engineering or Section 31, Section 31 having closed recruitment, Engineering if indeed a good starting place. I myself joined Section 31 when I joined 12th, but I'd already been playing for a few years. Medical-Exploration (Science), Tactical, Engineering, MACO, all are fairly popular too. You're free to jump divisions later too, so it's not bound.

3. Come join us on out TS: viewtopic.php?f=189&t=17257&p=224553#p232128, it's open to non-members as well. Feel free to have a chat with us, most folks are friendly out there. If you feel at-home, we'd be glad to have you! Also please don't berate yourself as a noob, everyone's welcome in 12th :) Don't hesitate to ask one of the people online to go on a team with you, working as a team can always be fun and things can get done quicker.

4. General minimum activity policy is login and play some (even if it's just 10 min) as well as login to forums every month (30 days).

Thank you both for your thorough replies. In that case, please consider this an application :)

On a related note, I've not seen chat commands for fleet in game yet, or looked at ways to split whispers into a seperate chat window so they don't get flooded by the general spam lol. Please let me know if there are recommended settings etc.

Looks like a quiet morning at the moment (famous last words) so I'll try to figure out how the R&D thing works. I just hit level 10 and grabbed the new escort, currently just using 2 plasma arrays up front and one at rear (I know torpedo is better vs downed shields, but it seems to suck vs shields and the enemies so far haven't lasted long once their shields are down lol).

I tried dropping one of the MK2 plasma arrays into the R&D window, but can't find anything to drop into the other box(es). I have a fair few R&D parts that I've collected.

Catch you later :)

Probably a good idea to start a new thread using the application form. It'll make things easier for our security boffins to process it.

Haha I've put an application in using the template so your security officer isn't too confused :)
